How do you muscle your way into a club whose members include the world's top cell phone makers when nobody wants you? It's a tall order, even if you are Microsoft Corp. The U.S. company is trying hard, though. On Wednesday, Microsoft was touting the virtues of its Smartphone operating system for use in a new generation of high-tech mobile phones at one of Asia's biggest telecoms trade shows. | ||

This battle is just beginning. Only now has Microsoft really been able to field a product. Up to this point, they only had a business plan.
With the software written (and by most accounts, it seems at least on par with the rest of the field), Microsoft is about to enter into the product phase where they traditionally SHINE... the marketing phase. The Beast (and I say that in a positive way) is about to get serious in this market. It'll be a very slow market share ramp-up... but every single market share point is HUGE. Anyone has any insight around purchases that Microsoft might make in this area. The analysts all quickly point out all the cash that Microsoft has on hand, but they all seem to think they'll spend most of it in the console games area. I would bet that a nice fat acquisition is coming from Microsoft in their mobile division. Anyone have any ideas who they might be interested in acquiring? |

Slightly off topic:
I would for someone to explain in simple terms what happened to the $5 Billion investment that MS made into AT&T. I know that this was in the cable business area but I would like to know what happened to the money and where there any gains for MS. Maybe FinancialWiz or Soda can drop a word or 2. |

| RedHook/Hailstorm - Its a 7.4% ownership in Comcast. The original investment has performed horribly. The 7.4% stake, includes the $5B of ATT stock PLUS that often-forgotten $1B investment that Microsoft made directly in Comcast back in 1997. |
