What do we need in a new operating system? The next version of the Microsoft Windows desktop is supposed to answer that question. Codenamed "Longhorn," the software is expected sometime in 2004 (probably later than earlier); Microsoft won't yet commit to a specific target date. But that schedule's already looking ambitious. MICROSOFT HAS BEEN very quiet about what precisely Longhorn will be about. I think, based on insider discussions, I know some of what it's supposed to include. But the official silence is a cause for concern. But we know enough to say that Longhorn is already a small failure; the possibility of a big failure looms. | ||

This article is piece of crap! the features that he say the next OS needs are things that the average user can live without. How many people are crying for Media Player 9? How many people are crying for Palladium? Rights management, we are all screaming for that :/ And the new file system "OFS", are we having problems with the current one (NTFS) that I didn't know about?
from my standpoint work on improving XP and lay off the new OS for a while. Do some stuff like. 1. Give me more than 2 TS/remote desktop connects. 2. Fix that annoying bug where after connecting with remote desktop and then logging onto the console the images look fuzzy (might be an issue with my nvidia driver but I am running the latest). 3. Improve Active Directory. 4. Drop XP Home |

unless I am wrong without buying additional licenses you only get 2 simultaneous TS/remote desktop connections. Also you can't drag and drop files which is really annoying. I just don't see the value in XP home even for mom and pop users unless the price difference makes it worth while, which currently it does not. |

TL, I thought you were the big Mac proponent on this board?
Interesting how Microsoft wants to "control users on their own desktops", yet Apple is the company that forces customers to use a SINGLE hardware supplier. Talk about lack of competition! Talk about CONTROL! This post was edited by mooresa56 on Wednesday, December 04, 2002 at 15:55. |

Why? I don't see any company talking about their strategies; when companies make announcements about futires products is because they are starting a marketing campaign. Why MS should act in a differet way? This "journalist" has no idea of what is talking about. |

#17 sphbecker , I was referring to the fact the you can't more than 2 simultaneous TS connection on Win2k Server. I thought that the same practice was carried over to remote desktop. I don't want to buy more license I just have to have more available simultaneous connections.
I agree #19,20: if MS did release info now he would be screaming about vaporware and fud. |

No.. What we need is for your to concentrate on getting .net2003 out the door with as few bugs as possible.. then spending a solid year focused mainly on improvements and fixes... Then MS you can go start work on the next "big thing". What we need is for you to stop rolling out a new OS every 18 months. |

OFS is old news RedHook,
the new WinFS is based on a sql server technology. and an next gen version at that (yukon) Actually there are Serious issues with NTFS. One, it has limited transaction capabililites(AKA journaled file systems) Another issue is that you have Systems running at the Application level doing File system level work. (active directory) There are other issues. but one thing that WinFS will bring is a Common data store. One it is based on Sql Tehcnologies. So you instantly bring in a More robust transaction based FS that has English language search capabilities. Further, Active Directory will move from a Jet Database Techonolgy running on top of NTFS to do File System maintenance. and be integrated into the WinFS structure. So Acitve Directory in Longhorn/Blackcomb days will feel less of a slap on to the OS as it does now and be more native. It alos allows for a Srrong Role based techniques and other features that are difficult at best to do now. Exchange server (code name Kodiac) will also be moveing to the WinFS file store. Try this now, Search for all documents where Bob and Jenny worked on together. And find Every Email, Word Excel, Photo, etc etc. That those two worked on together. Or since Graphics will be stored in a Database enviroment, they just become another object. So take one photo and search the sytem the network and say match this photo at 85% likeness. and find photos in the different storage formats used (jpg, Gif, BMP, etc) that match the the one that you selected. Moveing to a Filestore that is more intelligent for one(transactional based, that can be easily searched with a larger Metadata area for each file etc) Will bring humongous simplificaton in management, better search capabilities.. In the long run with Exchange server running directly at the fs level you eliminate an overhead of an ntfs with jet data store you have now. so it should run faster But even if it doesn't it adds functionality that greatly advances the system. Peer to Peer will also be greatly enhanced. It should also be pointed out that NTFS isn't scalable to the levels of the Pocket OS. WinFS will be. so you will have a common FS from the Pocket PC to Datacenter. Oh I think that Active Directory will be GREATLY enhanced in the blackcomb servers. El |

So if you have a company with 100 desktop WinXP Pro licenses, you also have 100 TS licenses for those users. That is my understanding. " This was the case with Windows 2000 Server, it is not the case with Windows.NET Server 2003. You will need TS CALS for every Windows OS now.
