Paying to play online games; Web portals play for revenue | |

Let the online games begin: Yahoo, America Online and Microsoft are in a cyber shootout for gamers willing to pay to play on the Internet. The portal giants are turning to fee-based services to offset slackening advertising revenue and subscriptions. The crowded playing field underscores efforts by Web sites to convert millions of customers into paid subscribers. The sites are following cable TV's model by looking for the online equivalent of The Sopranos and Sex and the City. Over time, they say, cable households spend more on special programming — even though they'd long gotten TV free. Yahoo, Microsoft and others envision Internet services, such as online games and e-mail, becoming must-have PC. | ||

This was coming and all of those who play on and have hosted game servers knew it. As long as its not too much I really don't mind. I do think that when you buy the game a "subscription" could be figured into the price but there are so many games that are hosted by anybody, Quake & SOF etc. That is a bit different than everquest or what MS might do with some of their games. And yes hosting a game server does eat of bandwidth and bandwidth does cost a pretty penny.
I personally think it would be better to leave it as it is unless it just becomes to big of a problem. rather than MS making the investment in hosting all the game servers for a certain game themselves just provide a "server" version like ID Software does and share that burden with anybody who wants to host one. I would imagine that even in the "anybody hosting" senario... there is a way to charge for that as well if you are the hosting company. |

I don't like games like Everquest. You go out and spend $30+ on the game and then cannot play it without having to pay another $10+ a month. If I can only play the game online (ie: Everquest) and have to pay a monthly fee then the game should be free. I will stick with Quake and Unreal, just pay for the game and can play it online all that I want to without paying a monthly fee. I can get America's Army for free and play online for free :)
