The number of operating systems in the handheld market will increase next year with the release of the much-anticipated Symbian-powered devices. But, while Symbian was set to dominate the consumer space, analysts said, it would be a while before the operating system posed a real threat the dominance of Microsoft and Palm in corporate computing. Symbian would have to become much more enterprise focused, Gartner Research vice-president Kenneth Dulaney said. "Symbian has had a lot of trouble with its devices. They signed up a lot of handset manufacturers, but these manufacturers have had difficulty selling the devices to the enterprise." | ||

Hmm. I've seen a couple of devices actually for sale using PocketPC. I've seen devices using Palm.
I've yet to see any devices using Symbian stuff. Not sure how they can dominate if they don't sell. |

I'm really sure that Symbian is a mess with 80% of handset makers supporting it. Even if Nokia supported it alone, it would still be a powerful force in the market.

I go out and look at Verizon, T-Mobile, etc. in our market and Nokia has pretty much died.
Audiovox and Samsung are the big sellers now, Motorola is back in business. I also see some Siemens and Ericsson phones, but none that look like they have Symbian. This must be a European market thing. The Blackberry is far more popular here in the states. |

blue, you don't see Nokia? I see Nokia everywhere I go - my mail box, my email inbox, driving down the road, any shopping mall. Nokia is everywhere. I'm not happy about that, but it's a reality where I am. |

JWM - Great. But nobody is selling the Sony P800. Where do I buy one in Minneapolis? Verizon doesn't have it, T-Mobile doesn't have it, Sprint doesn't have it, AT&T Wireless doesn't have it.
BobSmith - No, I no longer see Nokia. They dropped the 82xx series, the 33xx series is still around a bit, as they give them away for free. But a few years ago they were the phone everybody wanted to get... now they're impossible to find. AT&T is still selling them, but nobody else. The high failure rate of the 82xx series probably. |

JWM - Ahh! Well that's my point. How can something be dominating a market when they aren't selling? :)
So is the Smartphone different from the PocketPC phones? And how does Palm fit into all of this. And what about Blackberry? And we still haven't established whether or not customers want this. |
