Madhya Pradesh has shut the door on Bill Gates. The state government schemes will use Linux software. Chief minister Digvijay Singh personally conveyed this to Microsoft boss Bill Gates during an interaction last week in New Delhi. “For us it is not a question of Microsoft versus Linux. It is just a matter of choosing between a free software and a monopoly. We feel that when we are putting public information out in the open, then it should not be through a proprietary software,” Mr Singh told ET. | ||

stubear - I don't have a problem with governments using open source, as long as they are not paying developers to maintain it. For exactly the reasons you stipulate.
gg - Commercial Unix admins > Windows admins > Linux admins That's generally because those who admin Linux have little experience in the industry. sphbecker - I agree that cost is a factor. I also believe that this is Microsoft's fault, or problem. Let's look at their pricing: http://members.microsoft.com/partner/usa/licensing/pricelists/US_MOLPERP.xls Windows 2000 Server cost Open Volume: $706 Open Business: $738 Open Academic: $135 Charity: $135 Government: $673 Retail is like $999, but that includes 5 CALs. I guess my point is, the government price should be the same as the Academic/Charity price. |

I hope they train their admins to update and patch or they'll soon find their shiny new Linux boxes have been "0w|\|z0r3d", of course that's the same with any OS, but Linux makes the process different enough for the (former) Windows Admins that they may just not want to bother--which is a shame.

As for open standard file formats.
Where are they? What are they? The only ones I am aware of are defacto standards such as .DOC, .PDF, .RTF, etc. This isn't that hard people... |

| Since Word is the defacto standard for word processing docs, why not use the doc format? Microsoft has long ago published the doc schema. |

I don't know if DOC is well defined, but RTF most certainly is.
RTF is a Microsoft open standard. gg - Not correct. There has been at least 3 trojans found in open source distributions in the past six months. Actually it's worse, those trojans opened you up to getting rooted. |

There is a difference between trojans and spyware first of all. Secondly there is a difference between an OS being infected and some app being infected. Third, if I'm not mistaken (and I can't be sure since I don't use it) Kazaa is written in Java and is therefor crossplatform, so isn't a Windows (at least not Windows only) app. If Kazaa doesn't do Java, at least two other major gnutella clients are Java.
Generally speaking, I wouldn't say it is "easy" to detect a few lines of evil code among tens of millions - open or closed source. You'd have more luck detecting with packet sniffers and other related network tools than you ever would reading the source. |
