Linux, Open Source have 'more security problems than Windows' | |

According to a report published November 12 by Aberdeen Group, "Security advisories for open source and Linux software accounted for 16 out of the 29 security advisories - about one of every two advisories - published for the first 10 months of 2002 by Cert (www.cert.org, Computer Emergency Response Team)." Aberdeen says Microsoft products have had no new virus or trojan horse advisories in the first 10 months of 2002, while Unix, Linux, and Open Source software went from one in 2001 to two in the first 10 months of 2002, that in the same 2002 time period "networking equipment" (operating system unspecified) had six advisories, and Mac OSX had four. | ||

The same thing could happen to MS as well. In the past MS has admitted that hackers had access to Windows source code but that they had not made any changes. The problem with this is that because MS's code is closed no 3rd party peers can actually verify whether their claim is true. |

Why don't you do a comparison and open it up for public scrutiny? Currently your opinion is that Linux is more secure. Currently it is my opinion that you are full of it. My opinion is just as valid as yours. You do that research and prove your claim, otherwise your opinion holds very little weight. tgnb, you want to provide a link to that? So far as I know, nobody has had write access to any Windows source code. Actually, so far as I know, nobody has had any access to Windows source code. I believe the issue was with Office. |

| bas (#10), what? How many vulnerabilities have been reported in the last year before Microsoft even had a patch issued? I'd like to see your proof that anyone is withholding vulnerabilities for a year before releasing them. You've made an unsubstantiated claim. I'd like to see your sources to show that you're not full of it. |

Yes, I think it's quite clear open source software is not as wonderfully secure as it's proponents claim. This is good that the media is starting to notice. bas - God you are in such denial. I think this weekend I'm going to sit down and finish up my article on the lack of focus on security of Linux distributions. |

I would say pretty close to equal, if not a slight edge to Windows. Why? Well, because Windows has a much more robust security subsystem which allows permissions assignment at a very fine level of granularity. |
