The promise of the Internet still holds good, though its fulfillment is likely to take longer than was initially expected, according to Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft of Redmond, Washington. Gates, who is on a four-day visit to India, was addressing software developers Wednesday at the campus of software services company Infosys Technologies in Bangalore. "People have been asking whether it was a false promise--the dreams of the Internet changing education, the Internet eliminating paper in terms of how businesses work with each other, and enabling any buyer to find any seller in the world," Gates said. | ||

macrosslover, yes there has been progress... but we are no where near reaching those goals.
1. can a business integrate eBay in with their backend systems, so that product is "for sale" as it rolls off the assembly line. NO. And THAT level of sophistication is what Gates is all about. 2. can I get a degree that is actually RECOGNIZED. No. Can an online education compete with a real university education? No. Will it in the future? Yes, if Gates gets his way. You see, his vision is MUCH more advanced than what you consider "changing education". 3. legal reasons? Ha. Not at my office. Even people in their 30s continue to PRINT docs instead of reading them onscreen. Gates' vision is to eliminate paper by making documents READABLE on devices that allow them to read from anywhere. |

good points macrosslover, but I disagree with the sentiment of your first post.
I took my first University of Phoenix course in 1998, so YES I know them. And my point is that the experience is POOR compared to the classroom. There is a LONG way to go. Gates has the vision and the resources to make it happen. And the courts are starting to allow filings electronically, but until those abilities don't cost and arm and a leg and a leg... it will not be widespread. Laws will change, to encourage less paper... but until the technology becomes affordable and more secure (Palladium - level security - hardware and software)... then the current system will stick around. Re: the ability to sell stuff to anyone in the world. Again, until this ability is paired with the ability to update (in real-time) back-end systems... you will NOT see it catch hold except to the biggest of big companies. |
