Microsoft Reveals XP's Icon Must List | |

While news of a MSN Internet access icon emerged last week, Microsoft spokesman Vivek Varma on Wednesday revealed PC makers could also have to place icons for Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player as well as the Recycle Bin. The placement of the Windows Media Player icon could create more controversy for Microsoft as it puts the finishing touches on Windows XP. PC makers on Wednesday reported Microsoft told them the company would likely release final--or gold--code on Aug. 22. Varma emphasized that placing the Windows Media Player icon is not a new development. "OEMs (original equipment makers) have known about this since" Microsoft announced Windows licensing changes, she said. | ||

| #14, I think that there will be only a rush towards XP machines from CERTAIN makers. Dell for example, is very good at including a clean install CD of Windows so if you don't like the OEM install, you can use your OEM license and install a normal (clean) version the way MS wanted it. Compaq's license with MS, however, only lets them distribute factory HD images on CD. So, the rush from techies to get new XP boxes will only be towards makers like Dell, who will provide clean CD's for those of us who hate OEM installs. As for computer makers like Compaq, they'll get their customers in stride, just like everyone else, with no particular emphasis on purchases JUST because it includes XP. |

| You guys crack me up. MS is an illegal monopoly and that is upheld by the court? Just like OJ simpson didn't kill anyone right. And because one court rules that way I am supposed to believe that? Thats a load of crap. Bottom line fact is MS makes their software, if someone says that MS can't add new features to their software then its over for them. No software company can survive if they can't change their product. #4 you should consult your valued "economic books" which you esteem yourself so highly of. In a free market society the most popular product wins. Thats how companies work. You guys have no idea what kind of precedent this would set. The government could dictate what software can and can't be made. I am not saying MS isn't all golden here and guilty of no wrong, however most of the disagreeable things have already been taken care of. Analyze AOL and what they are doing. They are trying to compete against MSN because they are scared. Real is actually duking it out the way they should (with a better product). Kodak wants *exclusive* rights to Digital Photos in XP for FREE!!! What is that? That is not competition. AOL wants to pay computer manufacturers to make AOL the sole ISP that you can sign up for out of the box. Can you not see how that would be wrong? I think this is an appropriate reaction from MS for the good of all consumers. |
