Windows Movie Maker 2 is a beta release of a Windows feature. In order to
restore the original feature after updating Windows XP, you must use
System Restore. Please check to ensure System Restore is turned on before
you install Windows Movie Maker 2 Beta. As with any beta release, please read
the
release notes for more information before installing. Windows Movie Maker 2
is available only for use with the Windows XP operating system.
Windows Movie Maker 2 Beta makes home movies amazingly fun. With Movie Maker
2, you can create, edit, and share your home movies right on your PC. Build your
movie with a few simple drag-and-drops. Delete bad shots and include only the
best scenes. Add special effects , music and narration. Then share your movie
via the Web, e-mail, on your PC, CD or even DVD. You can also save your movie
back to the DV tape in your camera to play back on a TV or on the camera itself.

Pretty slick actually... I am impressed. MS is really hitting on all cylinders for the digital media stuff.
Enter iMovie killer. Much much better over v1.
Cant wait to see how this progresses.
Peace,
RA

I can only hope that this is truly an IMovie killer. I have to check it out, but I really hope that its a worthwhile product.
If MS really continues to get serious about Media then watch out competion and consumer will reap the benifits.
Now, when Movie Maker 2 goes gold then Apple folks will have even less to boast about, which will be good because Mac fans are already too vocal as it is.

They've integrated a lot of the functionality from Microsoft Producer along with more extras -- just as it was mentioned a while ago that they would do this. Nice.

I'd like to play around with this, but the whole "System Restore" thing to remove it is bogus.
Why not a simple Add/Remove Programs entry?

I use Movie Maker exclusively now for editing my home videos. It's the easiest one to use so far. I've tried Video Studio, Adobe Premier. Liked Movie maker the best. The only down side is you can not added any special effects or titles. Can't wait to try the version 2.

From WMM2 Help:
"In Windows Movie Maker, movies saved to a recordable CD are saved by using Microsoft HighM.A.T.™ technology. A HighM.A.T. (High-performance Media Access Technology) CD can contain audio, video, and pictures. HighM.A.T.-compatible consumer electronic devices recognize how the content is organized on the CD, and enable users to play content using the displayed menus. The recordable CD can be played back on a computer as well."

I guess you could save your edited content to DV, then convert that to MPEG for a VCD. Or if the video is from a DV cam, you could save it back to tape, then use that to make a VCD.
Burning to DVD requires additional DVD Burning software (It also appears not to be implemented in this beta).

enforcer, so when becker says,"The app still doesn't have the functionality that I want," your advice is "Well, you can use the app and then export it to some other app or device that does have the fucntionality instead of expecting MM to have the features you want." (?) Brilliant! Yeah, I would recommend he uses something else too. ;-)

thanks, Jagged, I didn't tell him to stop expecting new features either--I just told him--MM2 doesn't have those features so you will need to use other software as well too--same as enforcer. If the word "expected" throws you so much that you think I am referring to all future eternity, well, you know what I think of idiotic presumptions... And while we're talking about the painfully moronic, becker wasn't asking if other software have such functionality, he was asking why it isn't in MM2...
[Jerk as enforcer:] Becker, I'm not saying that there will no longer be features added to MM, and I know you're asking about MM features, but if you want to burn VCDs and DVDs, you'll need other software.
[Jerk as Jagged:] Boy, that's pretty stupid, but since it's an ignorant softie position, I'll criticize jerk for restating the same thing and saying that it amuses him for being stupid.
[Jerk as Jerk:] Hypocrite.
Happy, Jagged?

Sodajerk, it's no different than if I was working in iMovie (for example) and ultimately needed to export to WMV format. Wouldn't you want to help me? :-)
I'm just presenting options. He said he WMM2 does everything he needs besides export to VCD. Why introduce the possibikity of spending more than he has to to get the functionality he desires?
There is nothing wrong with the advice I gave. It was largely a number of suggestions.
----------------------------
"Enforcer, I wasn't telling becker that there will no longer be features added to MM, I was saying that if becker wants to burn VCDs and DVDs, he'll need other software. "
-----------------------------
Why restate what's already been pointed out? :-)
Besides, this is Beta. He can submit feedback. No guarantee it will be implemented in this version as the featureset may be frozen. However, he can submit feedback to Microsoft.

Also, sphbecker, go here for a free program that will convert WMV to MPG for VCD or SVCD.
http://www.tmpgenc.net
I just confirmed that it works with WM 9 (would've reccommended it sooner, but wasn't sure about this). You'll have to use the "All files(*.*)" filter when opening the WM format files because it only filters for .asf by default.
The conversion process is pretty fast too. It also works with DV-AVI.

umm, enforcer, becker already has a program of choice which performs the functionality he desires. His question was, or rather it wasn't even a question: he said: "I would like this feature, but MM2 doesn't have it. This program I have, and use and presumably like, does." He also asked what's the deal with claims of saving(burning?) to DVD... which no one has provided an answer for so maybe you can answer that...
I don't see how that's similar to asking how you'd create WMV content from iMovie?

...he also complained about tying the installation to System Restore, which no ones provided an adequate explanation for the need for yet...
and foxbat complained about it not having openness for effects (and an SDK as well presumably) after giving it props...
so why don't you answer any of the questions or explain these opinions/objections...

He also said:
"I really wish it has support for burning VCDs. ... WMM2 can do everything MWave can except burn VCDs and DVDs."
This implies that he also likes WMM2, but wishes it had 1 extra feature. I provided solutions to the 1 lacking feature. It's as simple as that. Either way you choose to spin it, I gave him options to work with, including the possibility of getting the missing feature included in a future release. One other thing you choose to ignore is that WMM2 will be free with future Windows purchases (tmpgenc is also free) whereas he will have to spend more money for future upgrades of MWave. In the long run, I am saving him some cash while providing a solution to his problem.
I also already answered the DVD issue in post 18. MS site says WMM2 will support this via third-party software. This ffunctionality doesn't yet appear to be implemented in this beta release of WMM2:
"Burning to DVD requires additional DVD Burning software (It also appears not to be implemented in this beta)."
It is similar to the iMovie question because if I had iMovie and wanted WMV export functionality (and that is the only thing that made me have to use something else), and a solution was available, I would rather someone offer the solution other than, "Sorry dude, you'll just have to keep using Adobe Premiere to get WMV export functionality even though that costs more than the solution I could've told you about."

-------------------------------
No uninstall besides System Restore is most likely because, like IE, the WMM app install includes components used by more than just the WMM app.
SDK for effects filters and other functionality is already offered through DX Media Objects and the DirectShow SDK, and probably through the Windows Media SDK.
