America Online said it would allow its next version of AOL Instant Messenger to communicate with ICQ, a surprise move that will topple the long-standing barrier between the company’s two popular IM services. Competitors and critics, most notably Microsoft, have complained to regulators that AOL’s resistance to opening AIM to third parties is an unfair exploitation of its market leadership. During the review of the AOL-Time Warner merger in 2000, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates urged Federal Communications Commission officials to closely examine AOL’s IM dominance. Gates also advocated the need for a standard that would let IM services interoperate. | ||

| Neb, maybe I misunderstood you. Perhaps you aren't aware of the number of users MSN/Windows Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger have. I good deal of people don't use AIM/ICQ. And another goodly amount use more than one client. |

| JWM, Microsoft complained along those lines as far back as '99 if not before. This is nothing new. |

JWM, are you listening? Microsoft's IM client grew like gangbusters BEFORE any bundling occurred. And even if it didn't, there is NOTHING illegal about bundling. Ask the Appeals Court, if you don't believe me. |

Well if a common internet based IM standard was adhered to than it really wouldn't matter would it. IOW who cares if it is MSN or AOL or Jabber or Trillian etc etc. if the common Protocol was used, you would just choose your flavor of Client and access the IM's and talk to all of your friends. Right now with this disconnected IM crap. you have to pick and choose your client. At least AOL finally figured out the BS with AIM and ICQ which they own. Although in the long run it looks like the JABBER protocol will become the standard Internet based protocol. That is based on a Internet standard (it has been send to the standards bodies) While I agree that Companies should have a Different internal standard than the standard internet standard (for security reasons) And that is where these IM can reall compete. Offer it to businesses. Of course with VS.net for Yukon and the integration with MSN messenger (hopefully with a secure channel) the writing is on the wall for AOL and ICQ. El |

| FW, who are you to say that ppl aren't switching providers? I switched from AIM to MSN. I won't talk to anyone who won't use MSN. Many of my friends only use MSN now. Certainly there are those that use multiple clients. There are also those, that use only one client. I and many of my friends fall into that category. Other than a short stint with Y! to get through a firewall, I've been exclusively MSN since it was released. Prior to that, I was AIM only. Guess that makes you wrong, doesn't it? |

| Hail, what is your source for saying 60% of MSN Messenger users ONLY use MSN Messenger? Nobody has ever asked me! Were polls conducted? Was spyware involved? Are your statements just speculation and not fact? |
