OS Comparison - On Which Operating System Do Games Run Best? | |

There's no question about it - modern operating systems, such as Windows 2000 and the latest Windows XP, provide the user with a much more stable work environment than the fully outdated software architecture of Windows 98 or ME. Among PC gamers, performance differences between these operating systems are still a point of intense discussion. Which one is faster? In addition, there are still many games coming out on the market that don't run properly on Windows XP. A good example of this is the U-Boot game "Silent Hunter II," which managed to crash the entire PC within a few minutes. At the time, the developer simply shrugged its shoulder at its own Internet support forums and merely pointed out the fact that ultimately, Windows XP is not an OS for games. But apart from games (and a few special applications as well), which other applications really need the fastest and newest hardware? Certainly not Word, Excel & Co. | ||

| XP is horrible for Return to Castle Wolfenstein for me. W2K works better for that particular game. |

| Perhaps it's just me (no pun intended... "puns are the lowest form of humor..."), but I've had nothing but terrible luck with Windows ME. I'm not a big fan of Windows 9x, but personally, my experiences with Windows 98 have been much better. |

Hmm. I'm having a problem with one of my spare computers trying to install XP to it. The install works fine, but when I try to format the rest of the drive as a second partition, the harddrive actually disconnects itself from the IDE channel. XP then crashes because it's no longer able to page or run stuff, etc.
It's interesting... Win2k worked fine on the system. I'm still investigating, but I don't think the drive is bad. I'm actually leaning towards a bad IDE cable. It is kind of frustrating, and it's one of my main complaints with PC hardware that I can't always guarantee the quality of components. But then I love the fact that parts are cheap, so I do not complain a whole lot. kirk26 - RTCW works fine on my XP desktop. Most problems with RTCW seem to be video related, and I ould insure you have the latest drivers from the card manufacturer for your system. |

Yeah, it's pretty weird. I just downloaded Western Digitals diagnostics program, ran that from DOS and it came back clean. I'm running the 'write zeros to drive' now to sort of wipe it out and try the XP install again. I did throw in a 80 gig drive, went thru XP install and format of the 2nd partition and that all worked fine. Usually when a drive fails on me, they just flat out fail... this is just kind of funny. :)

| consultant - Good! I found a KB article that mentioned a similar failure can be caused by corruption in the disk signature. Not sure what that means, but I"m hoping wiping to all zeros solves it. :) |
