Microsoft still has yet to deliver the second release candidate (RC2) of Windows .Net Server 2003, but that doesn't mean work on the version of Windows due in 2005, code-named Longhorn, has come to a standstill. Over the weekend, a couple of Windows enthusiast Web sites, led by Winbeta.org, posted a handful of screen shots of an alleged early version of Longhorn. | ||

Bob, you can use the ffdshow codec to view it. The alpha version even works well (though they do have a release version, too).

I don't see why they would. ffdshow works, and is currently better than the download DivX offers. When DivX offered a codec download, it was fine, but then they started pushing their Playa app. I use WMP and only need a DirectShow codec. Currently, ffdshow is the best codec I've found for playing DivX other than getting the ripped DivX codec from some third-party's site.
Most people here don't care where it comes from as long as it works best for them. Many people here dislike certain open source software mainly because they have tried it and have valid reasons for not liking it, or they have researched the other product and know it will not fit their needs. They don't actively mandate that no one use other software, however, unless there is significant risk in using it that they should be made aware of. I support MS, but am not above trying other things. However, if I happen across another vendor that offers a free mp4 codec that also plays DivX well, that is better than ffdshow, I'll use that. I also use a free mp4/aac codec from http://www.evivio.tv that plugs in to WMP. It also works with Real and Quicktime (for greater mp4 support). Given the choice, I'd rather have content in WMP 9 format, but if it's not, it's always good if you can download a codec rather than an entire player. Oh, and why is it so hard for people to believe we are not sheep and actually use MS software by choice? The sheep are those that blindly oppose MS and cling to someone elses rhetoric without checking the facts (not referring to you byeep). They must've let that URL reg lapse, I could've sworn I went there just 2 days ago. :-)
Well, here's a link that works: http://www.envivio.com They call it the envivio TV player, but it's just a codec package (one install for all players/you can choose which ones). They also redesigned their site a bit. | byeep, sorry, most of us actually take the time to THINK and USE before we call something bad, not just based on who made it, was it an evil corporation or a pro-consumer, pro-anything-anti-MS, anti-corporate angels... maybe you should try the same. |
