Will C# benefit Microsoft, or the industry? | |

Now that Microsoft's C# programming language has been approved by the International Standards Organization (ISO)--and the company's Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) is on its way to passing--one question looms large: Will Microsoft use its intellectual property rights (IPR) to make it difficult for developers to comply with these standards. If Microsoft uses those IPR rights to erect obstacles--in the form of royalties or denials of licenses--the result could well be the antithesis of a standard. Compliant products might be available only from one company--Microsoft. Imagine the color red established as the international standard for stop signs, but the color is only available from one company. According to Microsoft, third-party developers who want to develop or deploy an implementation of C# development tools and CLI-compliant virtual machines, which are part of the .Net framework, must enter into a reasonable and non-discriminatory (RAND) license agreement with Microsoft. That's the short answer. | ||

I remember when, primarily in the java advocacy newsgroups, I would mention that C# was an ECMA standard, and everybody would say "So what... that means nothing. Microsoft just did it for publicity. It's not a real standard."
Well, now we have ISO approval. Where are the Java guys now? Is this real enough for you? |

I stand up and aplaud the effort put into coming up with the stop sign analogy. Kudos!
Of course, it is incorrect and misleading... Stop signs are MANDATED for all to use. C# is not. |

C# or Java faster than C++? LoL. Never gonna happen. Next thing you know those same people will say Java will be faster than assembly code. JIT, by definition, will be slower in execution unless you count compile time of C++ code as part of its execution time. JIT makes the code cross platform, easy to manage and flexible. That's all. BTW, in .NET, you can choose to compile to machine code directly to skip the JIT. |

| I can imagine C# in some cases being faster than C++. Why is that so hard to believe? |
