While the battle between Microsoft Corp. and the open-source software movement dominates headlines, another phenomenon is shaping the marketplace — at least for servers used by businesses. It turns out the dueling approaches to software development are both gaining momentum at the expense of Sun Microsystems Inc. and other companies that customize hardware and develop unique flavors of the Unix operating system. | ||

| What I find odd is that IBM and Sun are both openly admitting essentially a bait-and-switch tactic with Linux. Both IBM and Sun (McNealy directly) said that they are offering Linux to drive the sales of AIX and Solaris... well, how could that work? Essentially, Linux is a steep discount to get you onto their hardware. Once they have you on their hardware and you realize you need AIX or Solaris, they have you right where they want you. |
