Microsoft ranks somewhere between mega-voiced cellphone users and New Jersey Transit as a source of daily irritation, but every once in a while they do something right to keep you off balance. After I used Microsoft Money for many months, a disk problem surfaced that required reinstallation. And that required the install CD-ROM, which a search showed would require a trip to Chesapeake, Va., where it had apparently joined much of my other software as a permanent guest in Daughter One's new apartment. | ||

For some reason, people like to believe that MS never listens to consumers or has bad support despite much proof to the contrary.
It's like the myth that MS only started putting security features in their products after Bill G's memo, despite the many security and stability features that were in Windows (especially NT), the hotfixes and SPs issued, and the work on .NET long before the memo was written. |

x, the point was rather obvious.
Money is a very nice program. I like the fluid feel of the app, the ease of navigation, and the web integration. Stellar software! |

I like Money, there are parts of the app that work well. Then there are other parts that don't work at all right. Then there are the parts that used to work well but were broken by the latest upgrade.
I don't know what I have now, I think it's Money 2002, and I upgraded from Money 2000. Well with 2002 they broke the internet updates functionality so that it no longer works nicely. You have a choice of using passport, which is supposed to be seamless but when I first tried it constantly fails. Or you can do manual updates, but now they added a new feature where it sends you off to a blank screen which forces you to hit OK. Which wouldn't be so much of a problem except I already hit OK to acknowledge the update worked. Stupid UI design. I also have an issue with the reports. I'm trying to do an Asset Allocation report on my retirement accounts, and it just up and decides that it doesn't want to include three funds out of my 401k in the report. No reason why, they're checked off on the report customization dialog. Nice problem considering half my money is invested in those three funds. One thing I do like with 2002 that was improved, I have more control over the spam, er I mean advertisements they pump at you on the front page. The thing is, I've used Money since '95. I had '95, '97, '98, 2000 then 2002. The worst upgrade was actually from Money '97 to '98 when you lost half the functionality, even though you gained the ability to export to Excel. It's always something like that, you upgrade because you get something new that you've always wanted... but at the same time after working with it for a couple months you realize all the stuff that no longer works right. Nice program, but the product manager needs to be shot. |

I use Money 2002 also. I'm not sure I recall the update issue your talking about. Do you mean updating the MSN Money (the stuff on the web) with your recent changes on the desktop app?
As for Passport, I haven't had any problems with it. It would be nice, though, if you could have more than one Money file associated with the same Passport, though. Another gripe is that if you have two credit cards from the same issuing company, you can't do the auto web update for both of them. You can only save one set of login credentials for a credit card issuing company per Money file rather than per account (credit card account, I mean). I went back and forth with the product support folks on this and they said, I should put the other card in a new money file. I thought that design was just plain foolish. |

I'm referring to updating stock quotes. I don't know why but I had a lot of issues with the Passport service as it kept failing to update saying something about being unable to authenticate. So after much effort(it is not easy) I switched it back to manual updates. But I think because they are pushing Passport they made manual updates intrusive, which they were not in Money 2000.
It's just quirky things like that. I've not tried automatic updating of credit card statements. I guess I still prefer to enter everything in manually, so I can verify each purchase against my receipts. I'm like Silas Marner, I like to count my gold pieces. :) Although I actually should go through the trouble of setting this up with my Wells Fargo accounts as I would like to use the automatic bill pay. Right now I enter it on the web and then cross enter it into money manually, not very efficient. It's these quirky problems that make me not want to buy the upgrades. |

| I check Money often enough, so I can still quite easily verify the cc transactions against my purchases. FYI, Wells Fargo charges for auto updating of accounts. Rather than using a bill pay service, for which there is also a fee, I find it easier to do EFT. I think I only have one recurring bill that does accept either EFT auto pay via credit card, or both. |
