Microsoft Updates Windows Media 9 Series Beta | |

Microsoft this week released an updated beta build of Windows Media Player 9 Series to Technical Preview participants. The new build, numbered 2903, features a completely revamped setup along with numerous bug fixes. The default "Corona" skin has been updated and is now resizable according to beta testers. In addition, a sleek new skin dubbed "Quicksilver" is available for Windows XP users. "We have fixed numerous bugs since the last beta refresh (build 2800). We encourage everyone --all web developers, ISVs, ICPs, etc...-- to install and provide feedback as we work towards our final release of Windows Media Player 9 Series," beta coordinators wrote in an e-mail to members of the Corona Technical Preview. | ||

you think it's reasonable to have beta software auto-updating to even newer beta software?
Guess I'm a "radical" or a "freak" but I don't want a buggy beta to potential effect other apps or the system without my approval. |

| No, I didn't misunderstand you. I am saying that you cannot anticipate the affects of a beta on the app itself, other apps, or the system, so why would any nutjob want a beta program auto-updating itself? |

"ALL" betas "should" be tested on "non-production" machines. Bugs should be of no consequence. But I do think that one should reformat a machine that has a beta on it before updating to the newer beta. Or, at least uninstall it before upgrading (if the installation allows for uninstall :-) |

specker, I get the point, I didn't think you were suggesting auto-install, but this:
"The person should understand that beta software can cause problems, and remove the software if they have any (shaking fist as MS). Presumably, when I beta program is updated, it will become more stable, not less. So auto updates would help stability, not hurt it." That's a huge presumption. A bug fix on one install could introduce a bug on another system. Auto-updating is simply not the way to test beta software--that is the point of beta software. The reason there are only one or two public beta builds is that is all that is required of a beta test program. You do not gain very much by every public user getting a new build every other day, but it could easily increase the number of problems along the way. |
