For Brooks Martin, patching and maintaining his Microsoft IIS Web servers is almost a full-time job. With so many vulnerabilities—and with a new patch appearing seemingly every week—Martin said it's a struggle keeping his head above water. We stay on top of what we do, but you never know," said Martin, CEO of isObject, an independent software developer in Brentwood, Tenn. "Maintaining IIS servers is a cumbersome, tedious process. Any time you bring a new server online, you have to apply 40 or 50 patches." Martin and his staff were spending so much time dealing with the security of their Internet Information Services servers that Martin installed an add-on program designed to harden IIS boxes against a growing list of bugs. | ||

| I tend to agree that the number of patches for IIS is getting a little out of hand. These aren't just stupid little patches you can ignore but the exploits give the script kiddies system level access. And that is pretty bad. Hopefully the worst is behind us. But the nature of software is that nothing is perfect. It was mentioned earlier and I agree that it would be better if all of this stuff were included in the Windows Update Catalog as opposed to the Microsoft Security site. |

| #8 and #7 granted all things have to be patched. I am complaining on how often it needs patching. If you have been running 2000 since last year and are being a good admin you have applied upwards of 50 patches if not more. I don't have an exact number but it is a lot. I was just saying that I wish they put a bigger emphasis on security. We have the reliability, and stability. Now give me security. Everybody has bugs. Duh. I want my vendor to be better than everyone else. Is there something wrong with that? |
