As Microsoft begins its push into the market for home-networking gear, its new products are having trouble keeping computers connected. Users have reported a myriad of problems, all involving dropped connections, and most affecting the company's MN-500 Wireless Base Station and MN-100 10/100 Ethernet Wired Base Station. Some users said connections were failing every half hour. A Microsoft representative confirmed the troubles on Monday and said the company planned to issue a firmware update to correct them. | ||

I had to buy a switch yesterday to use for some testing at work. I quickly ran over to Best Buy and looked at the various offerings.
I saw the Microsoft switch there, but I ultimately opted for the Linksys 8 port switch for $59. I still cannot figure out why Microsoft entered this market, as it's commodity with plenty of competition already. I also distrust their longevity in the market, so I would definately refuse to buy any product that may require drivers or firmware upgrades. i.e. i might buy their switch, but none of their network cards or routers. |

I wondered about that until I looked at MSN broadband and the benifits of bringing hardware that normally wouldn't be there. It alos encourages more than one computer system, (get MSN get a deal on a Cable wireless router) now you have incentive to use that router for other systems. Do I think it will be there for the long haul I don't know. Perhaps it would have been better to work with both Linksys and dlink (and the others in the group) to make an easier setup routine for the router etc.) El |

I can understand your distrust in their longevity in the market. I'm living that issue right now with my UltimateTV system. Don't get me wrong, I love the thing. I'll never be able to watch TV without a DVR again. But... The UltimateTV team has been gutted. Features promised back in January have not been released (i.e. programming via a web page). Software updates have all but ceased. The sad thing is, overall I believe it's a better product than Tivo. When I bought it, I was comparing UltimateTV and Tivo. My decision to go Microsoft UltimateTV instead of Tivo was based on a few factors: 1. Price. The UTV was $100 cheaper at the time. Also, the Subscription Svc is $3 cheaper per month. 2. Ease of use. With Tivo, you have to go to their web page to sign up, and I've heard it can take a WEEK to get enabled. With UTV, it's all handled by DirecTV. Just tell them you have it, they flip a bit, and it's instantly available. 3. No Spamming. Tivo is getting famous for forcing crap onto your system that you don't want for the sake of advertising. 4. Longevity. LOL! #4 was the most important to me. At the Time, Tivo was in _serious_ financial trouble. I figured that if anyone could make it in this new market, it would be Microsoft. How wrong I was... As soon as MS saw it wouldn't be a catagory killer, they gutted the division and left us in the lurch. Bastards... It still works, and I still prefer it over Tivo. I just don't know how long it will last. Also, the web page for UTV has been stagnant for many months. It's showing information that is way out of date, including equipment and equipment costs, as well as the dealer list. It's a damned shame :( I'll use it until it don't work any more, then I'll have to switch to Tivo, but I'll be kicking and screaming. TL |

Why switch to Tivo.
Build your own. :) A HTPC (home theater PC). and not that Media Edition that MS is putting out. One you can get tv info that will allow for recording. you also have the ability to get equipment for HDTV if you want. which Tivo doesn't currently offer. More importantly you don't have to deal with the service that Tivo provides. www.avsforum.com is also a good site to check out. MS acutally started a news group. news://microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter.hometheaterpc (which isn't related to media center except as a possible wish list for future versions. (like getting rid of that stupid DRM) Snapstream is an interesting software package also. www.snapstream.com El |

TechLarry - Yeah, I considered one of those as well, but I've avoided it thus far for precisely those reasons... Just not sure how much longevity there is, with both MS and Tivo.
eldoen - I agree. I have a WinTV-Go card, an 80 Gig drive and a copy of Snapstream Quartz Beta I need to get installed... |
