Sony wants to split the difference when it comes to adopting competing software products from Microsoft and Corel. The Japanese company, which has emerged as the fastest growing major PC maker in the world, is bundling Corel's inexpensive WordPerfect 2002 suite--a collection of software applications that includes spreadsheet and word processing programs--on all of its desktops. In turn, the company is offering Office XP or Microsoft Word 2002 on all of its notebooks. | ||

There is no way that Sony is paying $470 per copy of office. Granted there may addtional cost for Sony in stalling it but sill there no way that the difference should be that high. (excuse my run on sentence) |

Weird, I can get Office XP Professional for $299 through OEM pricing through mwave.com.
sphbecker - They still have upgrades... But they are no longer competitive upgrades. |

Well if you already have a copy of Office XP, you are allowed to install the application in two different systems. When you install it on a third PC, that is the time it will ask you to contact the product activation via phone.
Ok I will admit that I managed to install the copy of my Office XP in 3 different systems (2 desktop, 1 laptop) for awhile until I sold my PIII desktop. So if you have a copy already ...and you want a Sony system, then just remove Corel and install Office XP. |

| Hold on, didn't they say that Office is only going to be offered with the notebooks, that means the notebook in general is $470 more than the PC... BIIIIIIG difference in comparison there, as noebook components cost a lot more than PC components. |

No, CPU, they are saying you can build-to-order it with Office... (although I'm not seeing that option listed on the web site) which isn't that surprising, in such a case, you aren't using your standard bundle build, in fact, they probably uninstall WP and install Office (i.e. they probably pay per system for the Office suite so you are actually experiencing the cost of both if you prefer Office). We also can't know what incentives Corel is giving Sony... maybe the price difference is actually the result of a generous cost to Sony in exchange for pricing Office out of range, etc... Also, SOny's one of the few companies that can play hardball with MS--so they probably are trying to leverage "something" here.
And note that when it comes to the notebooks, Sony's crown jewels, they are packaging Office so I don't see what the whining is about. |
