Microsoft faces host of patent suits | |

The small silicon valley company, which once negotiated to build its copyright-protection software into Microsoft’s Windows operating system, accuses the software firm of violating 11 patents in a multitude of ways. InterTrust officials have discussed damage figures in the billions of dollars and don’t rule out seeking injunctions against Windows and other Microsoft products. “We have no desire to hurt the economy or hurt the country,” says Victor Shear, InterTrust’s chairman and founder. But he adds: “Patent is the little spot that won’t rub out.” | ||

I'm not saying that if Microsoft has violated patents that InterTrust shouldn't sue. I don't see, though, that if they are seeking billions of dollars in damages, that InterTrust could possibly not hurt the tech economy with such a blow against Microsoft. |

"At another extreme is Martin Reiffin, a 78-year-old former International Business Machines Corp. patent attorney who retired from the company in 1979. In 1982, he sought to patent a technique for allowing computers to do two things at once."
but wait... "Mr. Reiffin, who sued Microsoft in 1998 in federal court in San Francisco, alleges the company uses his invention in numerous high-profile products, such as the way the program Word underlines misspelled words as a user types." But it's also paginating and other things... That's far more than two things at once! |

| I was thinking the same, SOAP. We're talking about a 300 Billion Dollar company which has probably gussied several hundred million out of the media industry with the patents in question. Meanwhile the GDP is being whacked by a billion dollars a day because of the Port/longshoremans dispute... but this, yeah, this is going to hrut the economy. Uh, huh. |

| A few billion to Microsoft alone is what I said. That would seriously impact them. Further, the are potentially seeking injunctions against Windows and Office. That would even more seriously hurt Microsoft. A hurt Microsoft would hurt the economy. |
