Office 97 Users Warned: Upgrade Or Face Security Risks | |

Giga Information Group is warning the millions of corporate users still running Microsoft Corp.'s Office 97 to upgrade before they get sidelined with security and technical flaws. "You're putting yourself at risk by staying on Office 97," says Ken Smiley, director of research at Giga, an industry analyst firm based in Cambridge, Mass. "By no means should people be on it beyond next year. The sooner they get off, the better." | ||

| Most warranties only last a few months, hardly ever five years. They have to stop supporting it sometime. |

| I would think almost everyone would be using at least Office 2000 by now anyway, but maybe not. |

Though I can't argue that in most cases I wouldn't upgrade to newer versions without a real good reason. But, everyone here keeps barking about Microsoft Word or the Word Processor as the main program of an office suite. Personally I upgraded to 2000 for outlook and excel. Powerpoint is one major thing office users use though I don't.
Word processors or really pretty simple programs. Office is alot more than Word. I mean if you guys are buying Office suite's based off of word processors then please go to "Start" -> "Run" type "WordPad" and click "OK". That will usually do for almost every user of word processors. Excel, Access, Powerpoint, and Outlook... those are the real programs of office. I will say that OpenOffice is pretty damn good and I use it at home... I think one more version and I will be sold on it. |

| It took a long to time convince users to switch to Office 2000 because they like the Word 97 features that minimizes documents within the application. Word 2000 doesn't do that. |

The main compelling feature I can see is that Office XP is smaller and faster than Office 97. The UI is improved making it easier to work with the product. We've also found it better at handling particularly large spreadsheets(50 megs or more).
davis bacon: "I remember reading somewhere on the net, that most users only use about 10-20% of a wordprocessors features. " Yeah, you'll see that kind of nonsense if you read pro-Linux sites. If you can name those 10% of features I won't regard you as an idiot for bring it up. :) |
