Revenue considers ditching Microsoft | |

The Inland Revenue is considering replacing its Microsoft PC software with an open source alternative, vnunet.com's sister title Computing can reveal. The Revenue has held high-level talks with Sun Microsystems about plans for its 70,000 desktops. Senior US-based Sun executives visited the UK to discuss the issues involved in migrating Windows and Office users to Linux and Sun's StarOffice software. Many of the Revenue's PCs run NT4 Workstation software, which Microsoft will cease to support from June next year. | ||

The don't dare to go to Linux and StarOffice. A company with 70.000 workstations doesn't put their business to risk by taking such a major task. They will have thousands of applications that need to be supported on Linux.
The case would be different if some large IT vendor like IBM switched their employees workstations to Linux. Then there was some faith that this was working. Maybe they ditch MS Office -or at least say so, but before that they find out that many of the employees have build hundreds of self-build MS Access applications and that there even more have spreadsheets with a lot of intelligence floating around. Users would be very angry if and not fast convinced that StarOffice gets them the same functionality, especially they don't know if their spreadsheets and access applications still work. And since StarOffice doesn't offer an Outlook comparible, most users will be even more resistant; you are not easy giving that up! In the end they back down! I call this FUD - VNUNET is publishing more of these stories. |

70,000 desktop being replaced w/ a new OS and office suite.
I can see that a new helpdesk / helpline will have to implemented ...new people or training ...cost money Users calling the helpline ..."not sure what's causing it, but I will look into it" ...time spent researching might take days ...cost money Users going into training ...cost money (I'm sure Sun struck a deal for training, but it still cost money) Users productivity down for the next months or so because of not being familiar with the new environment ...productivity is down ...cost money New infrastructure and servers ...cost money Everything else ...there is an alternative OS out there called Windows XP from Microsoft |

I'm sure the research was done, but did they think about the users computer ability in this case. I think NOT. I work in an enterprise environment, and I see this happen all the time we do a major upgrade. There are some things that the IT department over looks ...specially when it comes to the users. beeyp - Yup! I think they'll need luck.
I just hope they factor in all the second desktops for their employees. Maybe they'll use VMWare instead, that might be a good solution. |
