Microsoft's share in the server operating system market jumped in 2001, according to a new report, yet analysts question whether the software giant will be able to offer a repeat performance for 2002. The Redmond, Wash.-based company's market share for shipments of new server operating system licenses jumped to 49 percent in 2001 from 42 percent in 2000, according to a research report released by IDC on Monday. | ||

This is *SIGNIFIGANT*, not that Windows 2000 server shipments grew... But the fact that Linux growth is stagnant.
"Still, Gartner does not predict any massive groundswell of support for Linux that would have any serious impact on Windows Server market share." |

You don't think that Microsoft server share jumped in 2001 because people finally decided to see what W2k Server was all about do you?
Maybe after trying to fool around with linux boxes they've actually seen that MS created a great product(my opinion I don't feel like siting any sources unless I need to). Now Linux will still coexist with MS but this shows that MS W2k Server is a substantial and viable product that is actually being adopted. |

In a year where the economy was supposedly bad, where MS wasn't that great in the PR department, and where they were releasing a new more costly licensing scheme, MS still managed to increase their share.
And yet, despite all these reasons why people might say, "That's it! I'm going to try Linux", Linux growth was stagnant. Like Sodablue said, this is significant. Linux had everything going for it and was unable to do anything. |

| Agreed. This is VERY significant. OS vendors can't even give their product away fast enough to overtake Microsoft's growth rate. Wow. |

stesa - It's not revenue, but supposedly licenses shipped.
The article quotes people from both IDC and Gartner. IDC's numbers are already on the high side with regards to Linux as they are apparently throwing in fudge factors for internet downloads and copies shipped for free with other products like Linksys cards. Gartner in the past has measured actual real-world deployments of Linux at the 8-10% marketshare based on a broad sector survey of IT managers. It's difficult to measure actual Linux adoption rates because of the variety of ways it may be obtained, but the Gartner method of using surveys most likely yields the closest results. Even so, it's signifigant and we may start seeing a shift in media coverage. It's amazing how media coverage shifting can damage a product, but look back at how quickly OS/2 died off after the antics of Team OS/2 caused reporters to stop discussing it. |

| #11 - Well actually no, you're wrong again. The article mentions the licensing and suggest it has hurt potential sales, but even with that there is no motivation to move to Linux. |
