Microsoft's wireless networking products, announced earlier this week, are apparently truly wonderful, but on (slightly) closer investigation their wondrous nature remains somewhat opaque. They are, it appears, badged Linksys products, and the US prices quoted in the announcement seem in line with what's being charged for those very same Linksys products at, say, Best Buy. | ||

| Well they are shaped differently. Btw the article is is perfectly in line with The Register style; I beta tested these devices and they are very good. |

There are reports that its throughput is higher than the Linksys. As #3 pointed out, the design is totaly different. Also, the greater support UPnP, auto firmware updates, and differences in configurability seemingly distance this product from Linksys' current firmware offerings.
I could be wrong, but I'd place my prediction above the register's. They use pricing and basic similarities to draw there conclusion, but they ignore the fact that those similarities also hold for products from D-Link, SMC, Netgear and practicaly every other vendor in the same market segment. What is interesting is the price. 225 dollar for a base station and a wireless PCMCIA card for your laptop is not much - compared to most products on the market right now.
I hope they translate it close to 225 euro in Europe; that would really be a price breaker. |

I don't know how much you Eurpoeans are paying for these things. Here in U.S. a wireless router plus a PC card should only cost you $150 to $180.
BTW, neither Linksys nor DLink or SMC manufacture their own products. They all come from another OEM manufacturer in Taiwan. So it should not be supprised if MS wireless products have some resemblence with Linksys. This post was edited by Foxbat on Sunday, September 22, 2002 at 21:37. |
