We're referring, of course, to the Smart Tags feature that was to be included in Windows XP. The most "helpful" MS trick since the talking paper clip was supposed to "link any word on a Web page to another site chosen by the company," as News.com put it - so the word "Webzine" might magically link to, say, Slate.msn.com, even if you're browsing Salon. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that this would cause loud complaints about monopolization and evil, and it did. So Microsoft has decided to pull the Smart Tags from the final version of XP and Internet Explorer 6. You are wise, grasshopper.
