Its code name is "Longhorn," and for many industry-watchers, Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) next major operating system release promises some dramatic changes in the way information is organized, retrieved and displayed. Microsoft already has made a significant commitment to production of the OS. Company chairman Bill Gates told analysts in July that the company will increase its 2003 R&D spending by 20 percent to US$5.2 billion and will hire 5,000 employees to prepare for a series of software launches that includes Longhorn. | ||

"They don't need all this fancy stuff. They need to be able to get to the Web, not blow up and get the blue screen of death," Giera said.
Then they should get Windows XP. Why doesn't Giga upgrade their computers from Windows 98 before they continue in perpetuating the myth that all MS OSes are unreliable? It makes them sound foolish. |

exactly, win9x cannot be comparred to 2000/XP. Even NT cannot really be comparred as it offers none of the niceities (PnP, DirectX 7+). What the average consumor doesnt seem to understand is that we are still in the infancy of PCs. The home, consumer PC is really only 20 years old and th GUI isnt even that old yet. but look at how far its come. back in 83 i thought the Apple //e was the most amazing thing, then the Mac appeared!
we are still a long way from the next tech revolution. We wont really be able to take advantage of this stuff untill everyone has some basic understanding of what this stuff can really do and how it works. The day people stop being impressed by the fact that they can print lables and evelopes with there overpriced HP retail PC will be a great day. Imagine if this stuff didnt have to be designed so an idiot can use it. You dont need fancy features if you can use the basic ones really good! |

| #3 I agree with you that computers are in their infancy but I don't think that the knowledge of the average user will improve, actually the opposite. How many utilities there are in a house and people don't have a clue about the way they are built or the laws of physiscs taht meake them work? IMO the real next revolution in PC will be a true "voice recognition" in order to control your PC using a natural language and no more commands or mouse r keyboards. Timeframe? At least five years because with true "voice recognition" I mean you in the middle of the kitchen spelling what groceries you need and the PC emailing your order to the Supermarket. Yes at least five but probably 8/10. Btw think about how long took to evolve form the first planes or cars to the actual ones. |
