More PC Makers Try Alternatives to Microsoft Suites | |

Hewlett-Packard Co., the world's largest PC manufacturer, and Dell Computer Corp., the second-largest, have each expanded their relationships with Canadian software developer Corel Corp. in recent weeks to offer that company's word processing package, WordPerfect 10, and spreadsheet application, Quattro Pro 10, with some of their computer lines starting this month. Earlier this year, Sony Corp. agreed to ship WordPerfect on a range of its PCs, from budget to high-end machines. Steve Houk, executive vice president of strategic relations for Corel, in Ottawa, said the Sony, HP and Dell deals could add about 5 million WordPerfect units to its sales, almost a 25 percent increase to its worldwide user base of 22 million. | ||

I agree, daz... while WordPerfect is a good product overall (and in some ways better than Word--Reveal Codes and the way it handles outlines, most notably), it's quite a bit more painful to support, and some of the bugs are really maddening. The requirement of having a local printer installed (we're experiencing this with WordPerfect 8, but I've been told it's no different in the latest version...) and set as your default printer--when you actually have no local printer hooked up to any machine, but only network ones--is particularly baffling. If you don't set it up this way, the documents will print out with very unpredictable formatting. If you're a home user, this usually isn't a problem, but in a company, it's a hassle.
That said, I'm also glad in a way that this is happening. I hope it puts pressure on MS to lower their prices and to stop alienating their customers with no more upgrades, etc. |

WARNING: OFF TOPIC
Does anyone know of the KB article yet outlining the Windows XP SP1 changes? Or has it been created yet...??? Sorry to post out of topic but I needed to see if I could get my hands on this information as quickly as possible and I figured posting to the latest article out there might get a little attention. Thanks all! Andy P.S. One reply will be plenty so we don't clutter this place with off topic crap. I hate doing this as it is. | I've been aware of an alternative for more than 10 years, but I still wouldn't touch WordPerfect. Anyone who goes to CompUSA or just about any store that sells Microsoft Office will see Corel WordPerfect Office not too far away. I don't think it is an issue of people not knowing about WordPerfect. I think it is an issue of people not wanting it. |

| You assume that the reason people choose Microsoft Office is for compatibility. As an individual, I chose it after evaluating both WordPerfect Office and Microsoft Office. I chose Microsoft Office because it was a better product. I continue to choose it becaue it continues to be a better product. I know many other people that see it the same way I do. |

this might actually make more money for MSFT. Here's how. Microsoft gets, what, maybe $30 per MS Works suite preinstalled? Well, if the number of systems preinstalled with works goes down by 100,000 that would mean (100k * $30) = $3,000,000 lost.
But if only 10% of those lost desktops end up buying MS Office at retail ($450 for standard edition), then they would still end up with (10% * 100k * $450) = $4,500,000 or 50% more than buy selling Works to the whole group of users. And who knows, maybe 10% is low. I don't think its too high. Thoughts? Problems with my math? |
