Thanks WMLAH.com: Microsoft changed the name of the family of server operating systems it plans to release next year to Windows .NET Server 2003, company representatives said late Thursday. The new name is the fourth for the family of server operating systems. Its code-name was "Whistler," a name it shared with pre-release versions of the Windows XP client operating system that shipped in October. It was briefly known as Windows 2002 in the spring of 2001. Then Microsoft renamed the OS family "Windows .NET Server" in line with a company-wide move to insert the .NET brand of its Web services initiative into many product lines. | ||

| I thought they were trying to get away from putting the year at the end of the names because it made the products seem old after a few years. Windows 95 is outdated in the year 2002 but will Windows XP be outdated in the year 2009? |

| Putting the year on the product is great. It let's you remember how old the product is. It is also a convention that is being adopted by the rest of the industry. |

| It's not on the blid side at all. I'm well aware that Windows XP is really Windows XP version 2002 version 5.1. How many people know it by version 2002? or by version 5.1? People know it as Windows XP. The name of the product should have been Windows 2002. Or perhaps Windows XP 2002 (a la Windows .NET Server 2003). Look on the splash screens when the products load do they say Visual Studio .NET 2002? No! Do they say Visual Studio .NET 7? No! From the common users' perspective the names of the products that you mentioned to not include a year or otherwise version. |
