Update: We have now had it confirmed that Beta 1 (Which is what it was called in the e-mail we received) will be released on September 4th 2002.
Looks
like Microsoft have released the Windows Media 9 Series website a bit early (you
can't download it yet), but the website is packed full of information about the
new upcoming media player including screenshots, features lists, information about the premium services etc etc. Check it out.

Byron,
Do you mean that beta1 will be out Sept 4th or the release version?

Hrm. Last night, when I went to hotmail, it had this new, re-designed look (bounced me to a .net/passport login page). Now that look is completely gone...

WMP 9 beta kicks major rump!
Be a rump kicker, get WMP 9!
I've been using it for several weeks now, and it's easily the best all-around media player there is ... yes, even better than WinAmp in some aspects.

#14 To be an all-round media player it would have to support all the dominant media formats which it does not. RealNetwork's recently released RealOne Player would be more deserving of that description.

Smiviz,
Don't you have to have windows media player installed in order to play windows media files, using Real"crappy"One?

Smiviz: Since when does a media player have to play more than just the file formats it was designed to play???
I don't expect RealOne to play anything but Real Aduio and Video. They should stick to what they do best. In fact though, they have to play other formats or else their player would have no market share!
I'm talking about the features of the software that make it usable, stable, fun, and different from the competition.

Point taken. Its interesting to see RealNetworks create an open source initiative with their player called Helix. I think they have learnt lessons from what happend with Netscape.

Smiviz, I wonder what lessons they've learned. Perhaps that while you are working on your open source project, your market share will dwindle to less than 5% while your competitor will jump to 96%. I see no real benefit to the open sourcing of Netscape.

#27 bob670,
Ready to provide some facts behind your case? I personally can't think of a manufacturer that doesn't have bugs in their software. Nor can I think of any manufacturer that has not released a service pack. And if they haven't, they need too. AND, I can't think of a software company that has released a newer VERSION of said software, with out fixing bugs.
I wait with anticipation with provided links by you to software that isn't in beta (meaning bug free)
Times a wastin', hurry up my friend. You FAILED to realize that the industry norm today IS bugs and security holes, by ALL manufacturers of software.

Brian and James, you two are dead on. It seems that the people who say that there are perfect applications (i should clarify and say apps that are at least 10,000 lines) aren't programmers. I've even worked with testers who didn't understand that perfect code is the ideal but not the reality.
Being somewhat philosophical - human beings are not perfect. I've yet to see anything a human being has produced which I'd say is perfect. Even if Microsoft produced a "perfect" version of Office. I know people that would say it is flawed simply because it was made by Microsoft for Windows. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder.
