Few companies can make waves without having an actual product on the shelves.
But that's the case with Microsoft Corp. and its move into cell phone software. It's causing quite a stir, thanks to some high-profile deals with wireless firms. No matter that Microsoft hasn't started selling anything yet. "There's almost more anxiety with Microsoft not participating in the market currently than with Microsoft actually doing anything," said Sarah Kim, a Yankee Group Inc. analyst.
