New Microsoft software upgrade program gets poor reviews | |

Microsoft's new program for selling its software to businesses might mean bigger profits for the world's largest software company. But according to a Boston research firm, the new Microsoft policy has infuriated many customers, and some might respond by switching to Apple's Macintosh or the free Linux operating system. "The fact that folks are even willing to entertain the thought is something I haven't seen before," said Laura DiDio, senior analyst at the Yankee Group, a Boston-based technology research firm. "I have been covering Microsoft for 14 or 15 years, and I've never seen this level of anger, of outrage, of dissatisfaction." | ||

#3 -- Not much of an alternative when a $3200 PowerMac is still slower than a $600 PC, and Apple charges full price for the equivalent of a service release of their OS which was beta quality and lacked features when it initially debuted.
Also, as #4 points out, Apple makes you buy an entire computer when you want to upgrade. Nice OS and applications -- Bad hardware and sales paradigm. As much as people complain about MS' pricing, it's funny to see Mac users post on forums how many computers they installed their single copy of OS X on, even though they are in clear violation of Apple's EULA, not to mention Apple actually being in greater need of the extra cash. And as much as I would rather not use Linux, both it and BSD are better alternatives when price is a factor. Then there's the other option: Keep using the Windows software you already have, and upgrade only if absolutely necessary. This post was edited by n4cer on Sunday, August 18, 2002 at 21:05. |

| I should be on my knees thanking Jobs for helping Microsoft to exist back in the 80's. He hasn't done anything of worth form me or Microsoft since then. |

| Personally, I've been reading articles about Licensing 6.0 for more than a year. I'm quite tired of them, so I've quit reading them. Does that mean the article has merit? No, it means that I'm tired of people whining and saying the same thing over and over about Software Assurance. |
