In Your Face! MS Open Source Attacks Backfire | |

A Microsoft effort to vilify Linux and other "open source" software appears to be backfiring, with the campaign drawing criticism from legal experts as well as unifying the movement's often-fractious group of leaders. The initiative has included speeches and statements in recent weeks by Microsoft officials, and reached a crescendo of sorts in a recent Chicago Sun-Times interview with Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, in which he called Linux "a cancer that attaches itself in an intellectual-property sense to everything it touches." Microsoft maintains that open-source poses a hidden threat because of licensing provisions that accompany the software. The Redmond, Wash., company appears to be fighting an uphill battle, since open-source code has become important for a growing number of companies. | ||

The article talks about Oracle, et. al writing software that runs on Linux.
This is true, but I don't think they clearly understand the problems the GPL does have. Right now there is even a question that if you link in to certain pieces of the OS, is the rest of your software to be GPLed? But recently there has been people who have realized you can throw a COM wrapper around GPL code, and use it that way. But there was great angst when it was found out people could and have been doing that. There was also the concern of the ASP model. You only have to distribute source if you distribute a binary. Well instead if you run the app on a web server, your not distributing a binary at all. So Richard Stallman has declared he is going to fix that in the next version of the GPL. I don't know how, but I can't think of anyway that will not conflict with non-GPL usage. Microsoft is correct in that the GPL is inherently bad. People need to start becoming aware of these problems, how they limit the computing world, and why they should be avoided. |

Wait a minute. Did anybody notice that the Legal Experts who Microsoft's strategy backfired with all work for the Free Software Foundation?

| What concerns me most about the Open Source movement is not Open Source, or licensing or any of that. It's that there is so LITTLE innovation in the software business that the only way companies can make money is by using OSS. Microsoft, love 'em or hate 'em, is one of the few companies innovating with new products that people WANT and are willing to purchase at a profitable price. |
