  NeoWin.Net Closed (Temporarily)
Time: 14:51 EST/19:51 GMT | News Source: ActiveWin.com | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Thanks Jacob: Regretfully, Neowin.net has closed down as stated as a statement on their website "We don't have the capacity to support the type of site we have always wanted to bring to our visitors. Despite our best efforts we are still refusing our visitors and long term members the web site due to errors similar to "Server too busy" Since Neowin will never be just another phpnuke or copycat wannabe tech site we would rather call it a day than continue to limp on our resources. So for now we opt for closure."

As always, we welcome former NeoWin.Net users to our websites, comments and forums. Update: They have now said it is only temporary, so as guessed, they will be back for anyone that cares.

It could have been their ego's that got too big and not the traffic. In all fairness they were a good site, It was a real shame they had to cause problems on our site a few months ago though.

Byron, I am willing to bet it was probably your good looks that scared them off :-)

are they closed permanently or just until they find another solution?

We didn't have pop(under) adverts until last week, simple due to the fact that we know we need the adverts just like any site. We just know what is needed and when, we're careful with how we work and make sure things pan out the right way for us and our readers

They had great forums. I loved the SOF2 pics. Do we have the ability to upload pictures here?

TRANSLATION:
We're so lucky, and when we screw up big time things work out OK! It amazes us that somehow we still manage to keep a handful of readers.

;-) Just kidding, you guys do a great job!

#15 - Nah we just know never to try and do more than the site can do.

#12 By 3 (62.253.128.4) at 8/8/2002 3:33:40 PM
#14 - soon, we're working on it. As we write all our own code for the site and never use anyone elses forums etc it takes a bit longer, and we're still a hobby site.

GhostRider - pictures suck bandwidth. bandwidth costs dollars

I've been creating my own little community website at home using .Net. [I'm modeling the way the message board looks after Activewin's, i.e. simple :)] I figure if people want to post pictures, there are plenty of ways for them to do that themselves on their own resources, and I'll just allow an easy way to post a URL people can go to.

I'm doing this because I'm either going to host my solution on my DSL line, or on my shared host, and both have bandwidth caps of one form or another. I want to keep that under control, so I'm trying to keep things simple.

From seeing neowin, and most PHPNuke sites it doesn't seem to me like that was a design criteria and it's not surprising then how poorly those sites perform. I follow one website which uses PHPNuke and it literally takes one minute to save a message. That can't be good.

sodablue- I agree about the bandwidth thing but Byron_Hinson[AW] said they are working on
on it.

Byron_Hinson[AW] - The other thing that was interesting about Neowin is how they showed the top 5 or so stories on thier other pages( gaming, forums, etc), at the top of the main page.

#21 - I would probably agree with you usually if it was any other site, but their staff posted on these forums/comments boards accusing us of stealing stuff from them and spamming us. I'm sorry if some of us here are happy about it, but their site was good (is if they come back), it was the attitude of their staff that brought it down. I notice we get complaints if we speak our mind in our comments board about them, perhaps you should have said something when they made jibes at Paul T last week.

I'm sorry you feel that way - but neowin won't get sympathy from anyone here, thats all. I guess we speak from the heart and being accused of something we didn't do and then having some of their staff and a few (small minorty) amount of their users try and cause trouble on our website got on our nerves big time.

If it makes any difference to you, if this had happened a few months ago, we would have been one of the first sites to offer them help on our server and line, but the attitude of their staff has ended any chance of that ever happening. But again, I'm pretty sure they will be back up and running very very soon, it would be stupid not to.

#24 - We could add that kind of thing sometime, right now we're leaving it as is - there will be something similar and in our view, better coming along. We like to be original.

#18 By 3 (62.253.128.4) at 8/8/2002 4:32:30 PM
#19 - believe us when we say our style of forums, comments etc will be different from everyone elses as we do the work on them ourselves. We'll be different with how images are used too.

#19 By 3 (62.253.128.4) at 8/8/2002 4:43:17 PM
#28 - they would only be doing what neowin staff and users did on our boards and theirs a couple of months ago.

Now this is hillarious! I had an argument with someone over on neowin when they posted about their performance problems. He swore up and down that neowin had the "ultimate setup" and would blow Windows 2000 out of the water.

I am sorry but I find the fact that Activewin is humming along great and Neowin is in the trash can very amusing. Where is the "ultimate" server now?

#21 By 3 (62.253.128.4) at 8/8/2002 4:56:50 PM
Just to clarify a few things. We're not happy that they are gone, they were a good website, good news, good forums, good community (well a hefty percentage). We are smiling because as most regulars here will know, Neowin staff accused us of stealing some news off of them once (which they have done to us in the past, but as news is filtered between most tech news sites it was no biggy to us). Instead of mailing in a complaint first, they tried to cause problems in our community boards with comments, one thing led to another and their staff rallied some of their forum readers to post on our boards, spam us (they weren't told to do that, but some of their readers did so) and thus we had to remove various parts of our site because of the immaturity of their staff.

In the end they did us the favour, we proved we didn't copy anyone, we got more readers who realised we were not being the immature party that they were and they helped us remove anonymous access to our site, which again got rid of their small group of readers who were brining down our comment boards.

So while it is a sad day to see their site go, we won't shed tears for their some of their staff. That is how we'll leave it.

#22 By 3 (62.253.128.4) at 8/8/2002 5:04:50 PM
We're not spamming their site, we not telling our readers to post on theirs, we're not accusing them of anything. What we use to advertise on our site would be our business, we don't tell sites to use popups if they don't want to but if you want us to end up like them then we can easily remove them.

Again im not personally laughing at them as I'm sure they are gutted, i feel sorry for some members of their staff and i feel sorry for their readerbase, im sorry that I may be coming across as laughing at them, but I'm not. I just don't like so called sites accusing others of things and trying to tell them what they think is how a site should be run.

Where will Activewin get all of its news then??????

j/k

#24 By 3 (62.253.128.4) at 8/8/2002 5:16:51 PM
#35, yeah we're going to hold a meeting in a minute and try to figure that one out. Any ideas?

#25 By 3 (62.253.128.4) at 8/8/2002 5:56:24 PM
As long as its just leak news you want you'll get it, we don't proclaim to link to warez downloads, we leave that to the sites that go down.
