The battle over today's instant messenger market is vintage Microsoft, whose strategy enemies call "the three E's" in a parody of the company's marketing mantra: Embrace a rival's technology, extend it to work best with Windows, and extinguish the competition. The software giant on Monday announced Windows Messenger, a text, chat, video, audio and telephony service that will be integrated with Windows XP. The feature has until now been a relatively muted part of the roughly $200 million marketing blitz for the new operating system. But its new multimedia features and its central role in the planned integration of Microsoft's Internet properties elevate the software well beyond a vehicle for text communication. Analysts said Microsoft views instant messaging--a key element of Windows Messenger--as glue for its new Internet services such as Passport and HailStorm. | ||

"Monopolistic business practices" = making quality software that people want to use. The problem is, their competitors do not do this and fail miserably. So they get scared when people want to use MS software. Please show me where one of MS' competitors is trying hard to integrate computer systems into your daily life so that everything you do can be enhanced by using the internet? It seems like all of MS' competitors are doing are making software MORE difficult to use for people (SUN with Unix and Java, *.* linux company with Linux, etc). Personally, I'd like to have all the features that Hailstorm promises. I'd like to live in an Internet-rich society where I can do everything from order groceries to plan flight reservations to watch television on my computer over the Internet. So far, the only company that has brought or is bringing this all together into one place is MS. Without them, there are all these services floating around that are not intuitive, aren't customized, and aren't really that great. |

This article bugs me because they give credit to AOL which they don't deserve.
Microsoft is not stealing instant messaging from AOL. The technology idea wasn't even created by AOL. Microsoft is basically taking the idea from the same place they received Kerberos from. Project Athena at MIT. It was called Zephyr. Instant messaging belongs in the OS. I just wish they'd provide versions that didn't have all the stupid ads and wasn't tied to the hotspam accounts. sigh... |

Actually in the case of Borland, I blame their problems really on the fact that they forgot their roots.
I'm probably one of the few who remembers when Turbo Pascal came out selling for a mere $49.95 when everybody else wanted $500. It also generated faster code and had the first Integrated Development Environment. In other words, it rocked! I can't say the same about Delphi. When I looked into it, it was much more expensive than Visual BASIC. If they had undercut on price like Turbo Pascal did, they might have become dominant. |
