Better Instant Messaging Through Linux | |

Written for the Linux operating system, Gaim may be the best instant messaging program around. Originally written in a college dorm room to emulate AOL's Instant Messenger, it now works not only with the IM protocols championed by Microsoft and Yahoo! but also with older, lesser-known versions like ICQ, Jabber and Zephyr. At one point, AOL sent its lawyers after the IM client, but the programmers who wrote it say Gaim's future looks bright. Like many pieces of software available on Linux, Gaim is free and maintained not by a for-profit company but a band of programmers working in their spare time. Unlike other such open source efforts, though, Gaim works better than any of the for-profit versions. AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo! should all look to it for tips. The interface resembles AOL's Instant Messenger, but it is far smoother and more fun than any of the major IM programs. | ||

*sigh* Another press writer who's caught up in the Linux fairy tale.
Gaim blows. Trillian and Jabber are much better. And Jabber works on most platforms and both support all the major IM protocols. -d |

chozsun: ummm.... I must say you have NO CLUE AT ALL about IM and IRC clients if you think Trillian is the best for Windows.
First Trillian doesn't comply with ANY sort of UI standard in Windows (one MAJOR point). Trillian does absolutely nothing other than support other IM protocols, meaning, it does not video, audio, etc... I'm just appalled that you think that the Trillian IRC client is better than mIRC. Why do you say this? Because you can skin it? Newsflash, there is more to stuff then how it looks. Trillian's IRC client doesn't allow you to do anything except just basic chatting. No scripting, now customization, nothing. |

The skins in WMP just have to be made to make use of the controls, and the default look of WMP does this.
Now, WinAMP has quite possibly the worsed interface I've ever seen. The fact that you have to right click to get any functionality is just absurd, it would be much better to just have the controls there to click on. Mozilla's not TOO bad, it has some of the standard stuff, it just doesn't use the built-in controls. I'm sure that someone could write a skin for it that makes it look exactly like an app written for Windows and only Windows (such as IE), where everything is just standard Windows controls. |
