Summer is usually a slow time for computer sales, but for software makers and PC makers alike, it's often the busiest time of the year, as upcoming new products are massaged into sellable form. This has never been more true than this year for Microsoft, which is prepping a number of important upgrades and pre-releases for its core products, all of which will ship soon. On deck for July are Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and Windows .NET Server Release Candidate 1 (RC1). Then, in August, Microsoft will ship the important Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) release, which will form the foundation of two new Windows versions, XP Media Center Edition and XP Tablet PC Edition, both of which will ship late this year with new hardware. | ||

Just wondering who is going to be the first to post about ATI releaseing a press release and info about the new ati 9000 and 9700.

People don't complain when Japanese or other foreign companies do this. Why is it always such a problem when it is MS. They also have a right to expand into new markets. If they end up taking over the market it is (like many times before) because they try to produce what the customer desires while the company(ies) currently in that market that has the greatest share sits on its butt and thinks it can retain its share without making significant improvements to its current products. There many past examples: Netscape, Palm, Sun, etc.
I dream of Windows powered devices. They often have a great UI, and have more features than competing products. The more devices I have that can seemlessly interface with my PC, the more I can do without having to constantly be sitting in front of my PC. Not to mention the areas where having a PC-based device is often cheaper and more robust than the equivalent standalone device (like HDTV or PVR or even a media jukebox). But Microsoft was not considered a monopoly at the time they started to oust Sun in the workstation and server markets. They were literally laughed at at that time. In spite of Microsoft's supposed monopoly, Palm still (currently) enjoys a greater share of the PDA market. There are numerous other markets in which MS competes where the success of their products was attained before they were considered a monopoly,or where their monopoly status had little to do with the products' success or mediocrety. There continue to be markets where MS maintains a minority share despite the supposed advantages of their position. The mistakes of competitors are repeated numerously. The competitors never regard MS as a credible threat, so MS provides features users want while being disregarded by the competition. Before the competition realizes it, they have, or are on the verge of losing their market dominance. Because they waited so long to respond, they often just relegate themselves to whining about being beaten for other reasons that what actually transpired.
In regards to Japan, I wasn't referring to the Japanese market, but to Japanese products in the US market. Sony, Honda, Mitsubishi, etc. can make everything from automobiles to DVD players, yet many have no problem with everything they own being made by Sony, etc., yet when MS does the same thing, there is always an uproar from some entity. There is even a double-standard among MS and other large American companies. AOL is a far worse company than MS, yet they have a lot more freedom to expand almost unrestricted. Meanwhile MS is continually persecuted largely based upon alleged acts of which AOL and others are actually guilty. One of the few successful American companies out there, and people would rather spend their time persuing every rumor or piece of speculation on then rather than taking a closer look at other companies filing for bankruptcy and leaving their employees in dire straits. Service packs weren't meant to be headline makers.
"As for .NET Server RC1, its primary role is an enabling product for Microsoft's continuing enterprise dominance" I'm not sure I understand what this means. In the server market Microsoft doesn't have dominance. If you mean that Windows servers implies Windows clients then I'd say you are right. Just as Oracle wants its servers to have Oracle clients and Sun to have Sun clients and...... If the product truly enables Microsoft to have dominance, it is because it is a good product that the enterprise market embraces. If the market embraces it, then the product stands on its own merrits. If the product has not merit, then the market will reject it. |
