Thanks Tim: Since the arrival of Linux, Microsoft has been forced to abandon its traditional value proposition of being the lower-cost solution in the IT industry and embrace a message that focuses more on the overall value of its solutions, says its president and CEO Steve Ballmer. Ballmer, speaking Monday at Microsoft's Fusion 2002 partner conference in Los Angeles, saidin this new competitive landscape, the software giant relies even more heavily on the expertise, contacts and value-added-services of its business partners to compete effectively against the Linux threat. | ||

| Well, so far Linux hasn't really touched MS's market. MS and Linux are eating Unix from both sides. Eventually MS and Linux will meet in the middle like the Soviets and the Allies in WWII, but that will be a few more years at least. |

I thought Microsoft claimed Linux has a higher TCO? Now they change their stance and say they have changed as a company to build a better product becasue they can't compte with the price of Linux?

| Yeah, I didn't know this had anything to do with the desktop; I thought this was about MS knowing that Linux is a real threat and doing everything to make them look bad, talk crap about them, attempt to kill them... And now, the rarity: MS has come around to realizing that their position of the last three years on Linux is pathetic and only hurting their own credibility. It's a real threat, and MS has to play a different game that it hasn't played before--even Ballmer says so. Now they are Sun 5 years ago being assailed by Microsoft when it comes to Linux. For all their history of being the choice of business because of the low cost, can they pull off saying they are the higher quality, higher cost alternative? |

tgnb - TCO is total cost of ownership, that is it includes the cost beyond the initial purchase price. Linux is free up front, but costs a lot in the end because of more user involvement to solve problems.
sodajerk - Microsoft already produces software of higher quality than the open source community, on top of this the software they produce offers increased productivity and lower TCO. With those facts behind them, it isn't a hard sale to make. |

sodablue: I know what TCO is, but thanks for explaining it. Nevertheless when Balmer said "We haven't figured out how to be lower priced than Linux" he wasn't talking about the UP FRONT price. In the context it meant the TCO.
Also on your reply that Microsoft produces higher quality software than open source is NOT a fact. Its your opinion at best. I guess I have to reboot those windows 2000 servers almost every few days becasue a new patch comes out that requires a reboot. Thats not quality! tgnb - Exactly. You can't be cheaper than free, and make money for long. Thus the value proposition comes into play.
As far as the higher quality comment, it is an opinion but thus far nobody has been able to counter my claim. Show me higher quality development and productivity tools. bluesky - Do something more than serve up static pages and you'll see the value proposition in IIS.
