Microsoft Unveils Windows XP Media Center Edition, Previously Code-Named "Freestyle" | |

Microsoft Corp. today announced the newest member of the Windows® XP family: Windows XP Media Center Edition. Formerly known by the code name "Freestyle," Microsoft® Windows XP Media Center Edition turns a PC into a media center that integrates digital entertainment experiences -- including live television, personal video recording (PVR), digital music, digital video, DVDs and pictures -- with the freedom of remote control access. Currently in beta testing, Microsoft will ship Windows XP Media Center Edition to OEMs in time for the holiday shopping season in the United States, Canada and Korea. It is expected to be available in Japan in the first half of 2003. | ||

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just read today on ActiveWin.com that Windows XP Media Center will be offered to OEMS only. This is hugely dissapointing and in my opinion a big mistake. I already have a tv tuner card and the only thing (that i know of) would be me purchasing a remote. I think Microsoft should offer an upgrade pack with a tv tuner card\remote\xp sp1(freestyle). Maybe not the tv tuner card... I would be willing to pay 100 bucks for that to use on my current pc. Please don't neglect those users who already have a pc as a part of their home entertainment system. This is a known market and I am not going to shell out $1000-2000 bucks for this functionality when I already have the appropriate hardware. Thanks, ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Maybe if enough people email them that we want this functionality but don't want to pay $1000-$2000 for it they will change their minds about the OEM only release. I think that this system will be available through OEMS only at the beginning than in a second phase it will be available through retail channels. If you think about it makes sense; it will boost PC sales or "upgrades" than, once this first wave will loose momentum, the package will be available to all those people like me who just bought a new system and they won't buy a new one just to have these added functionality.
