Touchstone Home Video's ``Tim Burton's The
Nightmare Before Christmas - Special Edition'' features more than 60
magical minutes of bonus footage and is available for the first time
on video and DVD.
The Special Edition features two of Burton's
frightfully comical shorts: his directorial debut, ``Vincent''
(1982), about a boy's delusion that he's Vincent Price, and the
never-before-available uncut version of his horror spoof
``Frankenweenie'' (1984), a spoof of the Frankenstein horror film
genre. The DVD also includes a still-frame gallery,
storyboard-to-film comparison and deleted scenes. Film buffs will
appreciate the presentation of ``Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before
Christmas - Special Edition'' in the original theatrical aspect ratio
(1.66:1) selected by the filmmakers, using a master approved by
Burton himself. For the ultimate in DVD audio, it contains DTS 5.1
and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround.

Trial
By Jury
He’s
guilty of murder. The feds have him dead to rights. At last there’s
no escape for this mob boss, a Teflon Don who has slipped free of
murder raps so many times before. But something goes wrong in the
jury room. Eleven jurors vote guilty. One woman, her life and family
threatened by the mob, votes to let the killer walk. And to set
things right, that woman will have to fight back with a vengeance.
In Trial By Jury, Joanne Whalley-Kilmer (Scarlett)
plays Valerie Alston, a dutiful juror thrust into a nightmare…and
forced by her plight to discover hidden resources she never
suspected she had. Armand Assante (The Mambo Kings) is the gangster
who vows death to Valerie and her son if she votes guilty. William
Hurt (Body Heat) as a cop turned mob lowlife and Gabriel Byrne
(Point Of No Return) as a zealous prosecutor add to the excitement
of this fast-paced action thriller.
Special Features: Scene
Access, Theatrical Trailer, Filmographies, Interactive Menus, Audio
Commentary
"Trial By Jury" is rated "R"
and has a running time of 100 minutes.
In
Dreams (1999)
Claire
Cooper’s (Annette Bening) peaceful family life takes a chilling
turn when a mysterious serial killer (Robert Downey Jr.) invades her
seemingly idyllic New England town…and haunts her dreams with dark
clues to his next deadly moves. With frightening accuracy, Claire
predicts his every turn, but still no one believes her.
Unable to convince the police, her doctor (Stephen
Rea) or even her husband (Aidian Quinn) of her mind-link with the
madman, Clair must confront the killer alone…and on his terms…before
another terrifying dream becomes a reality!
Special Features: Cast/Crew
Bios, Interactive Menus, Production Notes, Theatrical Trailer, Scene
Access
"In Dreams (1999)" is rated
"R" and has a running time of 100 minutes.
Body
Heat (1981)
Attorney
Ned Racine's life coasts along in neutral - until he meets a siren
in white (with a well-to-do husband) named Matty Walker. Ned knows
Matty's the kind of woman a man would kill to be with. So he does.
William Hurt and Kathleen Turner strike sparks in
Lawrence Kasdan’s Body Heat, a sexy, haunting tale echoing 1940s
film noir but charged with an energy and passion that can only flare
in the '80s. Kasdan’s assured directorial debut foreshadows the
emotional textures he would bring to later films The Big Chill, The
Accidental Tourist and Grand Canyon. Sit back and bask in this
contemporary classic’s wicked warmth.
Special Features: Interactive
Menus, Scene Access, Theatrical Trailer, Production Notes
"Body Heat (1981)" is rated
"R" and has a running time of 113 minutes.

Never mind the World Series. For some, the only
game in town was at Software Etc., where hard-core gamers lined up
to get the Sony PlayStation2
``If you're a gamer, you have to have one,'' said
30-year-old Gabrielle Aldort of New York, one of many people who
pre-ordered the $299 console in February.
The latest version of Sony's video game console
went on sale at midnight Wednesday at hundreds of stores across
North America. In fact, initial demand for the new PlayStation was
expected to be so great that Sony has already said it will not be
able to meet it.

With dazzling, near-film-quality graphics,
Sony's new video-game machine PlayStation2 is having a huge
impact in a related industry: Japan's fledgling DVD market.
Since March, more than 3 million
PlayStation2's have been sold in Japan. In the first eight
months of this year, DVD sales nearly quadrupled to 16 million,
compared to the same period the previous year, according to the
Japan Video Software Association, an industry group.
``We anticipated this giant boost from
PlayStation2 and began expanding our DVD section ahead of
time,'' Ayako Kobori, spokeswoman for Culture Convenience Club
Co, said Tuesday. ``Some people are using PlayStation2 more to
play DVDs than to play games.''

Panasonic
and MedioStream announced today the compatibility of
MedioStream's Medio MVision(TM) real-time MPEG-2 software
encoder and Panasonic's 4.7GB DVD-RAM drive. By integrating
Medio MVision and the Panasonic rewritable DVD drive, OEMs,
value-added resellers and system integrators can provide
their customers with a cost-effective solution for DVD video
encoding, decoding, high-capacity storage and exceptionally
smooth video playback.
Designed
to work with any standard Pentium II or III system, Medio
MVision delivers the same clean, crisp DVD video quality that
more expensive, hardware-based MPEG-2 encoders deliver, but
at a fraction of the cost. With MedioStream's advanced
algorithm, Medio MVision can compress captured video on the
fly, without causing any motion artifacts and without
requiring dedicated hardware. In addition to being able to
process 30 fps video with up to full D1 (720x480) resolution,
Medio MVision can be integrated to support all of the DVD
features, including navigation, MPEG-2 and Dolby® Digital
(AC-3) decoding, video/audio synchronization, decryption, 3D
audio, and more. Its unique and flexible bit-rate control
mechanism also makes it ideal for DVD authoring, video
editing, and video streaming.

Ad circulars in weekend newspapers began
touting the PlayStation 2 (PS2), although retailers concede
that your chances of getting one are slim when the game
console debuts Thursday.
The ads themselves sound promising.
Target, for example, is offering a free vertical stand to
those who buy the game console at Sony's suggested retail
price of $299. Best Buy is also selling units for $299 and
including a PS2 coupon book. Circuit City said it will offer
the game console for $349, throwing in the Fantavision game,
Gameshark sampler disk, and other goodies.
However, the fine print was less
encouraging. Neither Target nor Best Buy are offering rain
checks, meaning it's catch as catch can. Circuit City has a
warning on its Web site
that there are only a "small number" of
machines in each store and that it expects they will sell
out within minutes of stores opening at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Blade
Runner: The Director's Cut
Rick
Deckard (Harrison Ford) prowls the steel-and-microchip
jungle of 21st-century Los Angeles. He's a Blade Runner
stalking genetically made criminal replicants. His
assignment: kill them. Their crime: wanting to be human.
The story of Blade Runner is familiar
to countless fans, but few have seen it like this.
Because this is director Ridley Scott's own vision of
his sci-fi classic. This new version omits Deckard's
voiceover narration, develops in slightly greater detail
the romance between Deckard and Rachael (Sean Young) and
removes the "uplifting" finale. The result is
a heightened emotional impact: a great film made
greater. Most intriguing of all is a newly included
unicorn vision that suggests Deckard may be a humanoid.
Do Androids dream of electric sheep? Is Deckard a
replicant? As with all things in the future, you must
discover the answer for yourself.
Special Features: Scene Access,
Production Notes, Interactive Menus
"Blade Runner: The Director's
Cut" is rated "R" and has a running time
of 117 minutes.

An
anti-piracy fingerprinting technology for identifying
illegally copied CDs and DVDs has been developed by a
company specializing in the forensic analysis of
bullets. Intelligent Automation of Rockville,
Maryland has applied ballistic techniques to the
growing problem of pirating CDs, DVDs and CD-ROMs on
an industrial scale.
The
company hopes to sell the technology, which is still
in development, to pro-copyright industry consortia
like the Recording Industry Association of America
and the Motion Picture Association of America, police
departments and movie and record companies. "It
allows you to identify the source so you can go after

Based
on the current record breaking performance of
DVD-Video, the format continues its dramatic
growth. According to the Consumer Electronics
Association (CEA), in the third quarter of
2000, DVD player shipments were nearly 2.5
million units. This is 120 percent more than
shipped in the same period of 1999.
Launch-to-date,
more than 10 million DVD players have been
shipped to retailers, a benchmark of success
for any consumer electronics product.
DVD-Video reached this milestone faster than
any other home electronics product including
the compact disc and VHS. If growth continues
at this rate, there will be nearly nine
million DVD-Video players shipped to
retailers in calendar 2000, bringing the
total units shipped since the format's
inception to more than 14 million.

Aaron Neville will
become the first major artist to release
an album in the DVD audio format. On
October 24th, 2000 Aaron's solo album
'Devotion,' will be released on DVD
through Silverline Records. The companion
compact disc release of the title has
already debuted on the Billboard charts.
The controversial silence surrounding DVD
Audio has been broken by Silverline and
Warner Brothers who last week separately
announced a series of titles in the
long-awaited format.
Following
the motion picture industry's great
success with DVD video, the recording
industry is poised to do the same by
releasing DVD Audio titles, which provide
a stunning six-channel surround sound
experience. This advanced resolution
audio is more than twice that of a
traditional compact disc. In addition,
DVD Audio discs may contain exciting
visual content including photos, video
and conceptual art and graphics.
'Devotion' plays on all existing DVD
players as well as the newly released DVD
Audio systems.

Jurassic
Park (1993, 127 minutes)
Multimillionaire John Hammond
(Richard Attenborough) has a plan
for a spectacular new theme park: a
secluded island where visitors can
observe actual dinosaurs. With the
latest development in DNA
technology, scientists can clone
brachiosaurs, tricerotops,
velociraptors and a Tyrannosaurus
Rex, using the blood preserved in
amber from insects that bit the
dinosaurs long ago.
Paleontologists
Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr.
Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Dr.
Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) are duly
impressed with the living results
during an advance visit. But when a
devious employee tampers with the
sophisticated security system, the
dinosaurs escape, forcing the
visitors to fight for their very
survival.
The Lost World
(1997, 129 minutes, Deleted Scenes)
The disaster that occurred at
Jurassic Park is over. It's been
four years since the genetically
bred dinosaurs terrorized the
scientists and visitors who had come
to marvel at their existence. But
Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) has
just learned some very disturbing
news: John Hammond (Richard
Attenborough), the billionaire
entrepreneur who funded the original
Park, has been breeding more
dinosaurs at a second, secret
location. What's even more shocking
to Dr. Malcolm is learning that his
girlfriend, paleontologist Sarah
Harding (Julianne Moore), is already
at the site, studying the dinosaurs.
Arriving at the
island, Dr. Malcolm must not only
avoid the dangerous velociraptors
and Tyrannosaurus Rex, he must deal
with a big game hunter who plans to
bag the biggest trophy of his life,
and John Hammond’s nephew, who
plans to transport dinosaurs to the
mainland. Is San Diego ready for
dinosaurs roaming its streets?

market, signaling the format's
unparalleled acceptance among
consumers in North America.
This level is
reached faster than any other
consumer electronics product in
history, just three and a half
years after its introduction. The
DVD Entertainment Group announced
this new milestone for the popular
home video format at the annual
DVD Forum meeting in Scottsdale.
According to the
Consumer Electronics Association
(CEA), CD players took seven years
to ship 10 million units, and
eight years for VCRs to reach this
level. Underscoring the strong
consumer demand for the format,
DVD-Video players have doubled
their presence in the marketplace
since reaching five percent
household penetration in December
1999.

In an effort to
develop new digital products and
thwart Internet piracy, Warner
Music Group is expanding its
partnerships with secure online
distributors and preparing to
unveil a new, high-quality
DVD-audio format with
anti-copying features.
Warner Music
today said it will offer 100
audio tracks online through
Liquid Audio in its latest
digital distribution deal. The
company also plans to begin
distributing by Nov. 7 DVD-audio
releases from artists including
Stone Temple Pilots and Natalie
Merchant, as well as Beethoven
symphonies conducted by Daniel
Barenboim. Warner Music said each
DVD-audio disc would cost $24.98.
Record labels
have been struggling for some
time to inject a layer of
security into new digital music
releases. For example, all of the
major labels are moving ahead
with plans to offer secure
downloads by the end of the year,
although none have advanced
beyond the experimental phase.

secret lover. Though both
brothers have beautiful wives
(Maxine Bahns and Jennifer
Aniston), Heather triggers their
longtime sibling rivalry with
uproarious unexpected results.

Almost three
months before Christmas, it may
already be too late to get this
year's hottest gift.
Stores have been taking orders
since last year for Sony
PlayStation 2, and now some
have started waiting lists for
shipments that won't arrive
until 2001.
But unlike
past toy crazes, retailers say,
PlayStation 2 appeals to adults
born in the '60s and kids born
in the '90s. For about $300,
people get a machine that plays
DVDs as well as video games.

The sale and
rental of digital video discs
(DVDs) are exploding this year
and will lead to a resurgence
of growth for the overall
retail movie market in the
decade ahead, according to a
series of reports prepared by
Adams Media Research, and
published in the bi-weekly
Hollywood Aftermarket
newsletter.
After just
three years on the market, DVD
players are on track to
penetrate 12% of U.S. homes by
the end of this year, making
this the fastest roll-out of a
consumer entertainment
technology since
black-and-white television in
the 1940s. Those early adopting
homes will spend a staggering
$4.7 bil. renting and buying
discs in 2000, up from $1.6
bil. last year, according to
AMR. AMR's data appear
regularly in the newsletters of
its publishing partner, GRID
Media.
Given the
unprecedented levels of
consumption the new packaged
video format is inspiring among
consumers, AMR projects that
overall video rental spending
(DVD discs & VHS tapes
combined), which was $10 bil.
in 1999, will jump to $13.6
bil. by 2005. Video sales,
which were $9.2 bil. in 1999,
will more than double to $19.2
bil. during the same time
frame. By 2005, 61% of video
rentals and 74% of video sales
will come from DVD.
