Error:
5 When Playing Microsoft Games
If you receive an error message “Error: 5” when you
attempt to start one of the following Microsoft games, you may need to
delete the temporary files on your computer.
MS Error 5 Games include Microsoft Monster Truck Madness
2.0, Motocross Madness 1.0, Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far 2.0, Pinball
Arcade 1.0, Age Of Empires: Rise Of Rome, CART Precision Racing, Combat
Flight Simulator, Golf 99, Revenge Of Arcade and Urban Assault. Here is
the workaround:
1) Click Start, Find, Files Or Folders
2) Type “*.tmp” in the Named Box
3) Click Find Now
4) Click Select All on the Edit menu
5) Click Delete on the File menu. If you receive an Access Denied message,
quit all of the unnecessary running programs and then repeat steps 1-5. If
the above steps do not work, then make sure that duplicate CD-ROM drives
are not being loaded in Windows.
To do this, follow these steps:
1) Click Start, Settings, Control Panel
2) Double-click System
3) Click View Devices By Type on the Device Manager tab
4) Double-click the CD-ROM branch to expand it
5) Click a device
6) Click Properties
7) Click each tab in the device properties dialog box
8) Record the device information and settings
9) Click OK.
10) Repeat steps 5-9 to record information on each device
11) Click OK
12) Close Control Panel
13) Restart Windows in Safe mode. If using Windows 95, restart the
computer. When you see the “Starting Windows 95” message, press the F8
key, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. If using Windows 98,
restart the computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer
completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from
the Startup menu
14) When Windows starts in Safe mode, click OK
15) Click Start, Settings, Control Panel
16) Double-click System
17) Click View Devices By Type on the Device Manager tab
18) Double-click the CD-ROM branch to expand it
19) Verify that there aren’t any changes in the list of devices in the
branch. If a new device is listed that did not appear in the list of
devices you previously recorded, click the new device, and then click
Remove. Remove each device in the CD-ROM branch that was not noted. If you
see new copies of a device, check the properties of each copy of the
device. If the properties for the device match the properties you
recorded, keep the device. If the properties for the device do not match
the properties you recorded, remove the device.
20) Click OK 21) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click OK
