After years of railing against open source, Microsoft Corp is preparing to shift its stance by releasing code to the open source community. A member of Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative has told ComputerWire open source code is "coming". Stephen Walli, platform's business development manager, added Microsoft would likely release "non core" code - i.e. code that is not a part of the operating system.

Yes, it is a shame that those people want to get paid for writing software all day long. Shame on them. I say lets make selling software illegal! Lets make it so that all software is free like linux that way we don't have to pay for any of it. Oh yea, there is that pesky problem that we probably won't have nearly as many developers working on things due to the fact that they will need "actual" jobs to pay their living expenses, but lets just see what they come up with on their free time (that is if they have any left)

To cover your claims in comment 1. You're not entirely correct (just mostly). I remember that Allchin said to the U.S Congress that Open Source was an "intellectual property destroyer" some time ago. Other than that, they have mostly attacked the GPL.

Oh please, Microsoft, being chiefly responsible. They have railed against "open source" then they've trotted out the trained monkeys to say "we only meant the GPL," then ten minutes later they were railing against open source, then trotting out the monkeys again.

The "Software Communists" on the other hand are very clear about what they mean and don't mean. It's the @ssclowns like yourself and others who chose to misconstrue it. When the "Software Communists" speak of open source, they are speaking of the broad community, but you and other critics can only possibly have a problem with the GPL so you claim that's all they are talking about. Etc.....

Looking around on the web and the Halloween documents, I see primarily references (derogatory) to the GPL, not OSS in general. The only statement I've seen from Microsoft that is negative towards to OSS is by Allchin (which I referenced above).

They may have meant all OSS software when they made these statements, but thus far they have been very careful to direct most o ftheir antagonism towards the GPL.

Happyguy, the Halloween docs are internal strategy memos. More important to looking at Microsoft's message is publicly made statements at conferences and such... In which case there are numerous examples of them attacking open source in general.

I'm aware of what the Halloween memos are. I mentioned them to highlight that I've seen nothing that Microsoft has said publicly or in private (via the Halloween docs) that attacks OSS per se. They have generally been very careful to always attack the GPL specifically.
