Time: 20:56 EST/01:56 GMT | News Source: ActiveWin.com | Posted By: Robert Stein

You heard it first here! The official new name for the Longhorn operating system is Microsoft Windows Vista, according to our insider sources. The name was mentioned today at the Microsoft sales conference in Atlanta. The official announcement will go live at 6 AM PST. The press release will be live here at this time. Bink has followed up our lead by posting the Microsoft domain registration. Microsoft Watch has done a nice follow up to our story.

Yeah, I'm not too keen on Windows Vista, but I didn't like XP that much at first and now it's fine. Longhorn (and Whistler, for that matter) make for cooler names I'd say... but whatever...

It will always be Longhorn to me.

I would like Windows2006 better than that

Going with code name Xbox for the final Xbox name seemed to work pretty well.

The link to the press release does not work. Besides Windows Vista?! What has "View" to do with an OS is beyond me.

So is this going to be Windows Vista Version 6.0 Version 2005 which rivals the rediculous name of Windows XP Version 5.1 Version 2002 (or 2003 for x64)?

I thought it would be Windows FX (and still hold out hope that it'll be changed), but Windows Vista is not bad. It definitely brings to mind strong imagery: looking through a window to a gorgeous vista. Look at the world in a new way; look at your OS in a new way. I can see what the marketing folks liked about the name. If you don't like the name, keep in mind that you're mostly going to be referring to it as "Vista" instead of the full name. I don't mind it at all.

Well I have to admit that just after half hour since I first heard of it "Windows Vista" is beginning to sound better. Osprey: I like Windows FX too but you have to consider that at least 90%, and I am conservative, of the potential future users don't have a clue about what FX means.

Fritzly, 90% of people don't know what XP stands for, either... and most people think they know where NT comes from, but most are wrong. I don't think that a title needs to mean anything or needs everyone to know what it means. MS has done just fine with NT and XP. As long as people understand that Vista or FX or whatever is the newest version (and they'll know thanks to a media blitz like we've never seen), that's all that matters.

I'm sure MS will continue to do marketing analysis to see what people think of the name, and, if the community universally doesn't like it, it'll be changed before Beta 2. I think the only reason for releasing a name this early is to guage reaction and give plenty of time to think up new names.

"how about Windows XT" - Because then they would have to make Windows SXT (Super eXTream) and Windows SMXT (Super Mega eXTreame) and not Windows 2006 for the same reason they removed the date from the name for Windows XP, because they didnt want it to be "dated" just like Gateway removed the "2000" from thier name. And NT stants for "New Technology" which stuck instead of getting a marketing name. Personally I think Vista is ok, offering a new view and offering technology with a focus on what out in the distance. You really cant expect them to stick with Longhorn, or Whistler, or Memphis or Chicago or Blackcomb. Besides in the case of Longhorn, when it comes down to it who would want to buy "Windows Cow", and think of all the bad press jokes after its released..."Windows Longhorn - where's the beef?" "Steer Away from Longhorn" etc. etc.
