Hello; I am and have been running Windows ME for
probably a year now. I JUST RECENTLY HAD TO FORMAT and reinstall
Win 98 then, reinstall Windows ME over that. Ever since the
reinstall my Quick Launch Tool Bar instead of being just to the
right of the START button, is to the right of the sliding divider.
Can you tell me how to get it back just to the right of the start

Question 37 |
Submitted by Richard |
I recently bought an ABIT VP6 motherboard with dual
933MHz processors and 2GB PC133 SDRAM. I've tried installing Windows
2000 Server -- I have 3 CD's with this, and also one with Advanced
Server. All exhibit the same problem: while copying files during the
early stages of installation (the main file copy operation during which
the majority of files are copied from CD to hard drive), the computer
will occasionally blue screen -- but most of the time it does not.
However, it ALWAYS fails anyway -- several files will fail to copy. It
says they failed, and I can continue. Later, during the next phase, it
complains that it cannot read files that it DID successfully copy. On
each of the install CDs, the files that fail are generally consistent
-- that is, one particular CD has a set of files that fail, another CD
(of the same software) has a slightly different set that fails (with
much in common), etc. CD problem? Well, I tried two brand new DVD
players and a CD player, and all fail the same way. Media problem? I
took the media to another computer and successfully read every file on
it. Sounds like a hard drive problem? Well, I have 5 brand new IDE
drives and have tried several. Tried different IDE slot on
motherboard; tried 3 different sets of IDE cables (ATA100 and standard
40-pin). The system has nothing but motherboard, memory, 2 CPUs and
video. The guy I bought it from then took the machine to a techie, who
managed to install Win2K server on it. He won't say how, and says
"it's a secret". They're now claiming all Win2K installations are like
that (which I know is false as I've installed Win2K server, but not on
multi-processor machines before). They say the techie won't say how he
did it, but did warn I'd probably still have the problem if I
re-install. I don't want this machine in this condition. The question:
IS there some trick in some multi-processor systems for getting the
install to work? Is this an ABIT VP6 thing? Right now, my plan is to
go over there, and re-install Win2K server to a different hard drive.
If it has the same problem, then I am going to have to fight them over
their 20% restocking fee, as clearly there IS a problem. But I want to
go armed with some facts. Any ideas?

Question 26 |
Submitted by ? |
Dear AskAW, A friend of mine just bought a brand new pc
for his daughter (a high school need), and since I'm fairly competent
with pc's, I offered to set it all up for him (which saves him some
money). The hard disc is partitioned and formatted nicely, no probs
there. When I run setup from the WinMe cd (a license he bought with the
pc), I keep getting the Su0325 error at around 10% of the installation.
Now MS's site says this failure to copy files is caused by dirty of
damaged cd. Well, I tried to install WinMe from his cd on my good ol'
trial pc, and it did so without a glitch. I've also tried it the other
way around: I tried to install my licenses of Win2k and Win98 on his
new pc, and again they fail to install. Win2k with a similar message
(failure to copy files during install), Win98 crashes immediately when
entering the mouse driven setup area ("application error: w98setup
caused a general fault"). So of course I've tried the next logical
step: copy the Win98/9x dirs to the hard disc, and install from there.
Copying the files goes all fine, setup quits with identical errors.
Please help me out here, I'm losing my mind :-)

To whom it may concern, First of all I
wanted to say that I'm really impressed at you're website. I'm really fund
of visiting surfing through your site. I wrote to you guys because i was
just wondering if you can give me the step-by-step process of putting
password to my PC like for example having my computer ask for the user's
user name then following the password to finally have access to my PC. By
the way I am using Windows ME as my platform just to let you know. I tried
doing it myself by going to control pannel then clicking on the password
icon but whenever i put a user name and my password, by the time i try to
start up my PC eventhough i dont put my password it will just start up
right away just by clicking on the cancel button. I really appreciate if
you would give me the right way of setting it up so i can only, myself
only can use my own computer. Thank you for sparing time upon reading my
letter and i hope i would be receiving the response from you guys soon.
Respectfully Yours |

Unfortunately only the WinNT and Win 2000
systems are fussy about this and will not let you in by
pressing the cancel button. In Win98 and WinME security is
not so tight. There was a registry hack though where
Win9x/ME would shut down if the password was wrong or
cancelled. But by default the OS will let you in by
clicking cancel.

Sounds like a drive controller problem to
me.
Make all the ide drive controllers revert back to "normal"
or non-ultra ata.
Or when the install asks if you need to install 3rd party
drivers, say yes and put the floopy in for the ide
controllers when it asks.

Hello, I'm hoping you can help me out and give me a HUGE
favor to help me figure out how to fix something. I saved stuff on my C
drive, (just saved different emails in a folder in my C drive) and
somehow they lost there file type and will not open at all. I think I
have to do something by going to "view" in windows explorer and maybe
fix something as a file type but I'm not sure and don't have an idea how
to do it. Could you PLEASE try to help me out. It would mean a lot. I
know that the file type should be "PFC" because I saved some stuff from
my "personal file cabinet" in AOL and the file type now under
"preferences" just says "file." What I try to open up the files it says
"not supported by AOL" when it always was. So I just need to know what I
have to do to get it back to where it was originally, and if it's to go
under "view" could you please give me detailed instructions how to do
that. It would be such a HUGE favor...thank you very very much! thank

Question 53 |

Help! My daughter uses the internet to help with her
homework. She inadvertently stumbled on a pornographic site, so I tried
to invoke the Content Advisor settings under Internet Properties. Now
every time we try to log on, we get a message saying "Please check your
Content Advisor settings for missing information", and we are unable to
logon to access any website. The only thing I can see that might cause
this is, on the General tab under Settings, the box under user options
which allows users to see sites with no rating is not ticked. If I tick
this and apply it, I seem to be enabled to log on to the web again.
However, this option does not seem to be saved, so once the PC is booted
up again, we have the same problem again. The Contents Advisor does not
also seem to retain the ratings settings once the PC is powered down
(I'm guessing that there must be some sort of automated re-setting
involved here). As you can imagine, this is intensely irritating, and
means that, unless I am here to input my security password and make this
change, no one can access the Internet.
|
Solution 1 |
Answered
by Mean
Drake |
Most content advisor problems (except forgotten
passwords) are solved by deleting the ratings.pol file from your
computer. When you reboot, Internet explorer will ask for the
settings and this time the settings should remain this time.
See http://www.rsac.org/
For a complete walkthrough of how to set up content advisor see

everything is fine until just after I enter the password and windows

error message comes up saying: "error, Explorer has performed an illegal
operation and will shut down". After I do this I press the Windows button
and the Run Program box comes up. I have tried to use RescueMe but this

Windows? I would very much appreciate it if you could assist me. |

This could be caused by some program starting up

programs are starting up with windows and disable all the
unnecessary ones. Also I would suggest a virus scan. You can get
one done for free online too.

continue on to win98. At work, the login screen has just one user

login as another user. I really want a list of profile user names to
appear on both machines. Do I have two different releases of win 98?
Can I set up the work machines to display different users so novice

Here is something you can try:
Run regedit and find the key below.
Change the value of 'InitialKeyboardIndicators' to either '0'
for off, or '2' for on.
Restart Windows for the change to take effect.
Note: This change will affect all users but value can also be
changed on a user-by-user basis by modifying [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control
Panel\Keyboard] using the same values

Win says it's searching for new Plug & Play hardware, then it lists the
Pioneer DVD drive (which functions fine thereafter) along with all my
other hardware devices. Win NEVER starts up and recognizes the DVD drive
automatically; the only way I can get it to recognize is by running the
Hardware Wizard. Any suggestions on how I could get the drive to load
properly with Win2K?? Thanks in advance! |

Is there anything available for Windows 2000 similar
to the My Pictures Screen Saver program that runs on Windows ME? It
seems that a feature this good would have been carried over into the
new OS.

Windows 2000 is used more for business than
personal and multimedia purposes. Put the pictures you would like
in the following path: C:\WINNT\Web\Wallpaper, then in the Control
Panel, Display, Background Properties you can set your own
wallpaper.

Okay, I just bought a new computer with
pre-installed version of WindowsME. Every few minutes it will freeze, but
not completely. The whole computer will lock up (mouse et al.) for about
4 seconds, then everything will go back to normal. What's up with that? |

When you computer freezes, you need to do a
shutdown and restart, the a thorough scan disk and disk
defragmenter. You can use ScanDisk to check your hard disk for
logical and physical errors. ScanDisk can then repair the damaged
areas. When you reboot, windows will do a standard scan disk but
you need to do a thorough one and read the report and the end. Go
to Start Programs, Accessories to System Tools, and then clicking
Disk Defragmenter. To change the Disk Defragmenter settings,
click Settings. While your disk is being defragmented, you can
use your computer for other tasks. However, your computer
operates more slowly, and Disk Defragmenter takes longer to
finish. To temporarily stop Disk Defragmenter so you can run
other programs faster, click Pause. During defragmentation, Disk
Defragmenter must restart each time other programs write to the
disk. If Disk Defragmenter restarts too often, you may want to
close other programs while defragmenting your disk.

Hi guys. Hope you can clue me in here. I have a
compaq lte elite 486 notebook running win95. I am having some
problems with sound. I can play wav files and sound scemes but I
can't play sounds on media player(which I have recently upgraded),
winamp, or realplayer. Here's the kicker, like I said, it will play
sounds but when check in systems: Devices; it doesn't show a sound
card! Also, It tells me that I have no mixer devices. I spoke with a
com. tech and he told me it sounded like a software issue and then
told me he couldn't help me with it because it's a 486. Please help.

When you go to Settings, Control Panel,
Sounds, open up the Icon. Look and see if under Schemes, a
Sound name listed. You can click on each of the tasks and
assign a .wav, or .mid file to each action. It is fun. Good
luck.
