New to the Microsoft hardware line up is the Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000, Microsoft's thinnest keyboard ever. Touted as the 'Ultimate On-the-Go Comfort" keyboard, it is exclusively for Bluetooth enabled computers and does not include an USB transceiver. Features
Setup & Installation Setup: Getting started with the Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 is simple and straight forward. It comes with 3 AAA batteries, two for the keyboard and one for the number pad. No software is included. To set up the keyboard and number pad, simply add the devices using your Bluetooth application.
Keyboard Design & Use Although this keyboard is small, the keys are large enough to make typing as easy as a regular sized keyboard. The keys are refreshingly quite when typing too. The bezel surrounding the bottom and the sides keyboard is very thin and is made of a rubberized material that is very soft. The top bezel is shiny plastic with a battery indicator light on the far right side. The keyboard sports the full range of normal keys, including the F1 through F12 keys, a lower volume, higher volume and a mute sound key. It also has a Fn key, which oddly only has the Insert, Print Screen, Home and End key options. The number pad is even more straight forward, with all the keys you would find on a regular full sized keyboard’s number pad. Both devices have their own on/off switches on the back side. The number pad also comes with a handy carrying case. This keyboard set is ideal for individuals whose primary computer is a laptop, and for those who prefer to use an external keyboard as opposed to the laptop keyboard, especially laptops that do not have a number pad built in. I took to the keyboard naturally and it did not take any getting used to compared to other keyboards I normally use. In fact, I have found myself using my wireless mouse in between the keyboard and number pad. The Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile 6000 keyboard is even smaller than the Wireless Entertainment 8000 keyboard I normally use with my desktop computer, although the size of the keys are almost identical. The only negative I can think of with this keyboard and number pad is the fact that they run on AAA batteries, which may not last very long with extensive usage. It might take some discipline to remember to turn off both devices after each use. Final Comments
Overall, I like this keyboard set very much. It is stylish and functional at the same time. The recommended price of $89.95 makes it a little bit pricey for a keyboard, although it does add the convenience of a mobile keyboard and number pad for users who are often on the go.
