This morning at HP Discover 2011 in Vienna, Austria HP announced a variety of new products designed for converged storage optimization, and fit with HP’s overall “Instant-On” Vision for enterprise:

B6200 Store Once Backup System: For those who are unfamiliar, data deduplication is a data compression technique used to remove redundant data and increase utilization of storage networks.

The B6200, HP’s new product, brings many new features to the area as data in general is doubling every 18 months.  The system increases scalability up to 768 TB (though 512 TB is usable), twice the capacity of its nearest competitor and has deduplication ratios of up to 20:1 for storage of up to 10 petabytes

This storage size may seem a lot, but the B6200 supports data processing up to 28 terabytes an hour! That is six times the products closest competitor, and works out to about 224 TB over an eight hour time span. The other hardware product released this morning in Vienna is the X5000 G2 Network Storage System (two-node Networking Attached Storage NAS).  This product is integrated with Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 to help control file and data growth cost effectively via simplified deployment and management.  All software and hardware is pre-installed, and since Windows is included, it is natively compatible with a Windows network. HP is touting power on to file serving in less than hour, which is commendable compared to similar products.

The x5000 G2 is capable of supporting greater than 10,000 users, and provides up to 32 TB of capacity (expandable to over 100 TB with additional HP hardware). The system starts with two x5460sb server blades with between eight and sixteen 1, 2 TB 7200 Drives or 600 GB 15k drives, and a max of two server blades. And between 48 GB up to 96 GB of RAM per server blade.

You can use advanced BranchCache and file management tools to improve the overall file performance through data categorization and retention.

Culminating the releases today, HP released a new version of their data protector software powered by StoreOnce. The software increases the deduplication engine to deliver backup that improves storage utilization. Some of the focus points of the storage software:

HP Data Protector leverages StoreOnce technology to accelerate data analysis and reduce memory and disk I/O requirements during the deduplication process.

  • Deploy software deduplication in a wider range of hardware, including virtual machines, due to 90% lower RAM requirements than competitive solutions.

  • Improve overall application performance while backing up large data sets with up to 1.8TB per hour throughput.

  • Reduce IT costs by deploying target deduplication on existing application or backup servers without additional hardware investment.
