MORE INFORMATION
================

Internet Explorer 6 includes the following new features:

New Explorer Bars
-----------------

An Explorer Bar is a Web page that is contained in a window within the Internet
Explorer window. It occupies a vertical pane to the left of the main document
pane. Some Explorer Bars with which you might already be familiar are Search,
Favorites, and History. Internet Explorer 6 adds a Media Bar, Contacts Bar,
Search the web Bar, News Bar, a Personal Bar, and the ability to add new HTML
based Explorer Bars created by Microsoft or 3rd parties.

The Contacts Explorer Bar allows you to see all of your MSN Messenger contact
data within the browser. The Media Explorer Bar replaces the Internet Explorer
5.x Radio Bar, which only supported Streaming Audio. This new, lightweight
multi-tasking media player takes advantage of DShow and HTML Plus Time, allowing
the user to play media without launching new windows, randomly access local or
remote media, search for more media on the internet, easily return to any media
experience and easily access the latest Windows Media Player. The Personal
Explorer Bar includes three Explorers Bars in one: the Search the web, News, and
Media Explorer Bars. A new button has been added to the Standard Buttons toolbar
in Internet Explorer to access the Personal Bar. To access other Explorer Bars
or add/remove Explorer Bars, click Explorer Bar on the View menu in Internet
Explorer.

Support for Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) Standards
------------------------------------------------------------

A new Privacy tab has been added to Internet Options to set the level of privacy
you want when browsing by specifying whether Web hosts can collect client
information through cookies. Internet Explorer 6 implements the P3P version 1.0
compact policy specification to gather metadata about a web site's intended use
of cookie information. Once the metadata is collected, IE will decide (based on
your preferences as specified on the Privacy tab) whether to accept or reject
cookies on each web site you visit.

Third-party cookies will be disabled by default (Medium privacy level). If web
sites offer third-party content, this may result in a failure of some of their
services.

A new status icon ("the privacy icon") will be placed to the left of the "lock
icon" in the status bar. This status icon will report to you the domain name
(example: www.msn.com) of a site which does not meet your privacy preferences.

Note: The option to Import Custom Privacy Preferences is not implemented in this
Public Preview.

For additional information on P3P, please see the following web site:

http://www.w3.org/P3P/

For additional information on Privacy tab settings, please see the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Q283186 Description of the Privacy Tab in Internet Explorer 6

Virus Protection in Outlook Express 6
-------------------------------------

Under Tools, Options, Security:
Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me

If Outlook Express is configured as the default mail handler (or simple MAPI
client) on the General tab of Options, then this option prevents the
programmatic sending of email from Outlook Express without your knowledge.

Do not allow applications to be saved or opened that could potentially be a
virus

Other New Internet Options
--------------------------

The following new options have been added to Internet Options:

General tab

A Delete Cookies button has been added to the General tab of Internet Options.

Security tab

The settings for the security levels of the Web content zones have changed for
Internet Explorer 6 and might no longer be consistent with those in earlier
versions of Internet Explorer. If you upgrade from a previous version of
Internet Explorer, Setup will save your previous security settings and transfer
them to Internet Explorer 6 as a Custom Security Level.

To ensure that Java applets are unable to launch executables in the Restricted
Zone, The Restricted Zone settings have been modified as follows:

"Microsoft VM Java Permissions" is set to Disable Java "Script ActiveX Controls
marked as safe for scripting" will be disabled.

Clean Installs of Internet Explorer 6 (no previous Internet Explorer, so NT4
only) will apply the new restricted zone template. Upgrade installs of Internet
Explorer 6 on all supported platforms will not modify the existing Restricted
Zone settings.

Whistler: Clean Installs of IE6 will apply the default restricted zone template.
Downlevel: Upgrade installs of IE6 on all supported platforms will not modify
the existing Restricted Zone settings. Additionally, Cookies options have been
moved to the new Privacy tab.

A new setting, Allow META REFRESH, has been added to the Security Settings under
Miscellaneous for each zone. This setting is enabled by default in all zones
except Restricted.

The META REFRESH command allows the author of a web page to redirect your browser
to another web page after a specified amount of time. For additional information
on the META REFRESH command, please see the following Microsoft Web site:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/browser/mshtml/reference/IFaces/MetaElement/content.asp

Advanced tab

Enable Automatic Image Resizing

Default=on

This feature automatically resizes images that are opened directly in the browser
and are too big to be displayed in the current browser window. The image will
automatically resize so that it will fit, in its entirety, within the dimensions
of the current browser window. Images embedded within HTML pages will not be
automatically resized.

Enable HTML based Explorer Bars (requires restart)

Default=on

Force offscreen compositing even under Terminal Server (requires restart)

Default=off

Compositing is the process of combining two images to form a new image. The most
common compositing operation is an over, where one image is placed over another.
Compositing effects can cause flashing when running Internet Explorer under
Terminal Server. Enabling this option will eliminate the flashing but might
severely decrease the performance of Internet Explorer running under Terminal
Server. For a sample page that uses compositing effects, please see the
following Microsoft Web site:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/samples/author/filter/compositor.htm

Enable Integrated Windows Authentication (requires restart)

Default=off

Negotiate/Kerberos authentication is now disabled by default but can be turned on
with this checkbox.

Enable Image Toolbar

Default=on

By default, Internet Explorer 6 automatically displays a small toolbar when you
hover your mouse pointer over an image on a web page. This toolbar includes
buttons to save, print, or email an image or open your "My Pictures" folder in
another window. To disable this toolbar, uncheck this option.

Internet Explorer Error Reporting
---------------------------------

This tool allows you to report unrecoverable errors in Internet Explorer (for
example, general protection faults or invalid page faults) to Microsoft over the
Internet. For additional information on this feature, please see the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Q276550 Description and Availability: Internet Explorer Error Reporting

Other New Features

NTLM authentication through a proxy (proxy passthrough) is now possible with
latest version of Microsoft Proxy Server. NTLM and Negotiate authentication
currently require connection management for authentication to complete. Most
HTTP proxies are designed to support the standard HTTP message oriented
solutions approved by IETF. This implementation will allow proxies which manage
state on behalf of the client to pass-through authentication requests. When the
client connects to a site that requires NTLM or SPNego via a proxy which
supports passthrough authentication, the proxy inserts a "Proxy-Support :
session-based-authentication" header into the 401 response.  Without this
header, WinInet would ignore NTLM or Spnego since it is using a proxy for the
connection.  The presence of the header informs WinInet to allow NTLM or Spnego
as if there is no proxy in between.  (note: restrictions set in Zones/Advanced
Settings on the use of integrated Windows authentication/NTLM continue to
apply).

Credential Manager/Key Ring integration (Whistler only): Whistler integrated UI
for critical authentication protocols (Basic, NTLM, Negotiate/Kerberos,
Passport), provides a common place for storing and managing credentials to be
shared seamlessly across different processes. The credential management
component of this feature has been implemented only for NTLM, Negotiate, and
Passport authentication protocols at this time.

MSN authentication will no longer be supported by the IE product. The registry
setting which enables MSN auth in WinInet will be removed.

Passport 1.4: Implemented in winInet.dll. This is the first implementation of
Passport to use HTTP Authentication mechanism, developed by WinInet team in
cooperation with Passport team. In previous releases, Passport used cookies and
redirected unauthenticated users to an html login page. In this release, efforts
have been made to move Passport closer to a more secure HTTP authentication
protocol behavior.  Due to the scope of work involved in this feature, that
permeates beyond Authentication into Cookies and Cache and Redirects
areas, Tweener is treated as a separate area and the specification of test
coverage on this feature will be provided in a separate document.

Setup on Windows 2000 Includes Outlook Express 6
------------------------------------------------

Typical and Full installs are not currently available for Windows 2000. Internet
Explorer 6 will install a minimal set of files onto your system. This includes
the Internet Explorer 6 Web browser, scripting support, and Outlook Express 6.

Setup Not Supported on Windows 95
---------------------------------

Internet Explorer 6 does not support installation on computers running Windows
95. You must be running Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 SP6a or later to install
Internet Explorer 6.

Setup on Windows NT 4.0 Requires SP6a
-------------------------------------

You may receive the following message when installing Internet Explorer 6 on
Windows NT 4.0:

NT4 Service Pack 6a or greater must be installed before The Windows Update:
Internet Explorer and Internet Tools can continue.

Internet Explorer 6 requires Service Pack 6a or later on Windows NT 4.0. For
information about how to obtain the latest Windows NT 4.0 service pack, click
the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q152734 How to Obtain the Latest Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack

No Uninstall for Previous Version
---------------------------------

After uninstalling Internet Explorer 6, it is not possible to remove the browser
that was installed prior to Internet Explorer 6.

High Encryption Support
-----------------------

If you are running Internet Explorer 5.01 or earlier on Microsoft Microsoft
Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0,
installing Internet Explorer 6 upgrades your computer to 128-bit encryption. If
you are running Microsoft Windows 2000, installing Internet Explorer 6 does not
change the current level of encryption on your computer. Microsoft Windows 2000
can be upgraded by using the High Encryption Pack located on the original
installation media or from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site. If you are
running Microsoft Windows Me, then your computer is already using 128-bit
encryption.
