Gnutella developer commits suicide | |

Gene Kan, one of the key programmers behind the popular file-sharing technology known as Gnutella, has died in an apparent suicide, officials say. He was 25. San Mateo County Coroner spokeswoman Sue Turner said Kan was found last week at his northern California home. "The cause of death was a perforating gunshot wound to the head," Tuner said on Tuesday. "It was a suicide." A spokeswoman for Kan said he died on June 29 and was cremated on July 5. Further details were being withheld at the request of the family. | ||

I always wonder what would motivate someone to go to such extremes. Unfortunately the article doesn't discuss what might have been troubling him, if it was family, relationships, money, what. It's sad.

#12 - Sorry, but no. You can't blame the RIAA for harassing some poor guy who created software with the intention of stealing the intellectual property of the music and movie industry.
My suspicion is this poor guy had some issues with depression to begin with, and a variety of other factors came into play which pushed him over the edge. My experience indicates that because of the anti-social nature of the computing community, the people tend to be more at risk of depression to begin with. |

| You've got to be kidding TL. Exactly what files are shared on Gnutella networks that aren't copyright protected? I don't think I've ever seen one and I'm familiar with several Gnutella clients. |
