Michael Steil, a German programmer, has built an application called linuxpreview, which simply flashes the Xbox LED (light-emitting diode) and draws a penguin on the Xbox start-up screen, along with the message "Xbox Linux Coming Soon!" and a link to the Xbox Linux Web site. However, it is touted as the first application to run on Xbox without using tools from the official Xbox Software Development Kit (SDK), and is the first step toward turning the Xbox into a Linux-based PC.
Steil is the head of the Xbox Linux Project, which is marshalling volunteers to figure out a way to run Linux--which directly competes with Microsoft's Windows operating system--on the console without using any of Microsoft's proprietary development tools. In some ways, the project should be simple, since Xbox is built from hardware that is identical or similar to a standard Intel-based PC.

Ok, what is it with the fascination of making Linux (or anything else for that matter) run on hardware it wasn't designed for...specifically the XBox?
And why, exactly, does anyone think the XBox would be a good server? It's designed to do 2 things: graphics and sound (neither of which is what a server is supposed to be doing)! Get a real server for Christ's sake!

Cthulhu - "And why, exactly, does anyone think the XBox would be a good server? "
Because Linux users tend to be stupid?
I suspect Microsoft is chuckling over all the free publicity.

Comments like #3 [Halcyon-x12] amaze me. This guy is thinking or suggesting that if your planning to run a server farm that the xbox might be your solution. I am guessing that if you have a need for a server farm there might be some sort of business involved an or high level of traffic. In that case you should buy several Xboxs and cluster them running linux, great business plan. I also agree with #4, I could make up some new fangle sprocket and some guy will eventually hack it and install linux on it. Since the Xbox is derived from off the shelf PC parts I am not impressed. I wonder how long before some guys hacks the Segway HT and installs linux?

A server farm of X-Boxes? Oh joy--that'd be fun to set up and manage.
Amazing that so many people can get their life from spite.

Linux geeks think it will be a huge coup to get Linux running on the XBox, but MS will be laughing last all the way to the bank as droves of staunch "M$" haters fork out hundreds of dollars to buy an XBox to run Linux for the cool factor.

Do you think that MS cares?
First it took them all this long to hack to Xbox.
Second, go ahead and let them hack the Xbox ...more sales for Microsoft.
Third, you own a MS product ...what a shame.

Umm, the more sales crowd... You do know that MS LOSES money on XBoxes, right?
If someone buys an XBox or mods an already purchased Xbox to run linux and not to play games, this doesn't benefit MS.
MS is only happy if they sell lots of games (which maybe linux haxors are doing, but trust me, there are some who will buy XBoxes and will not buy a single game just use it for Linux) and if they can control the platform.
The linux haxors get what? (1) A cheap PeeCee. (2) Learn something by screwing around, cracking. (3) Send MS a big FSCK YOU by making MS LOSE money by BUYING from them.
This last reason alone, man... Wow, if only softies could appreciate how fittting the anti-soft crowd view this one reason alone.

What am I saying that is negative or trolling? I'm saying you are stupid if you say: doesn't matter, more sales helps MS.
By the way, in fact, it is largely beleived that Nintendo and ony both profit on their consoles. Certainly Nintendo who from the very beginning was going to be happy with the share of the market they got. In other words, being marginally ahead of Nintendo is in fact losing.
ANyway, if a basic point appeas as trolling to you whatever. I don't see how this predicts doom from on high from the Empire or anything... but, yes, I do think that if a complete Linux can be installed on the Box--you will see penguins buying XBoxes instead of using 386s... And I think this will hurt MS.
If you want to ignore that, go ahead.
