Wall Street's love affair with Linux companies may have ended a long time ago, but the open source operating system's march into the enterprise continues unabated, if slowly. Indeed, while Linux may have lost its lustre for investors, some banks, including CS First Boston and Merrill Lynch, have given it the thumbs-up and have begun replacing old trading systems and servers with Linux-based kit. | ||

I'd like to see some evidence of the Merrill Lynch moving to Linux comment.
Merrill Lynch is an historically Microsoft shop. If anything, I'd expect to see them moving towards Win2K DC since they were one of the initial pilot companies. |

OMG. I just read the whole article.
WHERE IS THE REGISTER AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH IT? A voice of moderation? Truth in the story? No editorializing or false generalizations? Real facts and numbers? THIS CAN'T BE THE REGISTER! What's even more scary is that this is what I've been saying for some time. Windows and Linux are growing into the server market like crazy and Unix (Sun, old IBM, HP, etc) are all getting squeezed out the middle. Sun's days are numbered unless they start jumping on the Linux bandwagon now. Either that, or an even smarter play (though this will NEVER happen), they should build a really kick ass Win2k Datacenter box. Work with MS to get Win2K DC ported to SPARC and then make a huge Sunfire box that kicks Unisys where it hurts and conquers the TPC. But, alas, it'll never happen, and Sun will file Chapter 11 and sell out to someone like HP or IBM or, dare I say, a then-emboldened Red Hat. Won't that be the day: "Red Hat to buy Sun for $5 billion" |

Trading Systems have been primarily Unix or Mainframe based on the backend, and Windows based on the front end for the past probably 6 years... If Merrill Lynch or Credit Suisse is moving to Linux, it's on the back end. Actually it's probably not the back back end, but the middle servers that service the client machines. The real back end is Mainframes because Unix just isn't good at handling that kind of transaction volume. (either is NT, but just pointing out reality to the unix bigots)
Another important aspect is the news servers... Bloomberg, Bridge and so forth, and they still run almost entirely off NT systems from what I still see. |

#4: I know Linux is replacing Unix, read my second post.
What I'm curious about is why Merrill Lynch would be doing that since they're a big die-hard MS shop. |

#5: Actually, Windows2k AS and DC _ARE_ good at processing that kind of volume. In fact, small clusters of Win2K servers smoke the mainframes.

Merrill Lynch is also utilizing .NET.
One of the main demos at the Visual Stidio.NET launch was how Merrill Lynch used .NET for their 1-800-MERRILL interactive voice recognition service. IIRC, the platform used .NET's interop cababilities to access data on legacy systems and used Win2K to do the data-to-voice processing and provide the voice UI elements. At the time I think the legacy hardware was running Unix. Maybe they are changing those to Linux. |

Merrill Lynch is a huge company, they use a lot of technologies.
