Could Red Hat become the next Microsoft--that is, could it become the dominant (not necessarily domineering) operating systems provider? What a ridiculous proposition, you might say. How could a little company that provides Linux open-source software hope to topple Microsoft? In fact, given that the Linux world is built on a collaborative approach based on the GNU GPL (General Public License), it's hard to imagine how any single open-source distributor could totally dominate. Everyone has access to the bounty of source code generated by the huge community of developers evolving the Linux platform. | ||

Methinks some of you should research the Palladium Project (sounds like something from the X-Files), and what it could mean to hobbyist computing.

#3, #4 Exactly where do you get the idea that Microsoft plans on doing that? If Palladium is implemented via PKI Microsoft wouldn't even have the ability to do what you suggest. Your statements are as foolish as saying that every SSL transaction made via Internet Explorer is reported to Microsoft. If there is no evidence of the latter, why do you assume the former?
TL, that is the second post of yours that I've read which talks of doomsday for hobbyist computing. Two questions - what does 'hobbiest computing' mean? Second why does the Palladuim announcement mean the end of it? If anyone saw the .NET video from back in 2000 about the guy on his bike that got hit by a car, went to the doctor, etc. He had a smartcell phone and via secure identity services authorized remotely his doctor and pharmacy to do things with his personal records. Palladuim is no more than a more concrete step toward what Microsoft announced as part of .NET two years ago. I don't see what all the fuss is about. |

I saw that video. I can't wait untill stuff like that is reality.

#13: Most companies don't compete in the legal system, they compete in the marketplace. Most companies may defend what they see as their property in the legal system, but that's a far cry from what Sun/AOL/Netscape/Real/Novell/RedHat are doing.
They have mounted a full-scale legal/political/social campaign against MS. Rather than making more innovative products and outselling MS, they are undermining them and it's despicable. Sure every large company plays politics a little, but not as a sole source of competition like the aforemention unholy alliance. |

FinancialWiz - No, I think the dumbest set of statements I would ever see posted would be disagreeing with what daz just said in #14. Face it, Netscape, AOL, Sun, etc. dropped the ball. They stopped competing in the marketplace through innovation, evolution and so forth and decided instead to start whining. |
